Disney Planning Holiday Layoffs
Source Confirms Company Announced Dec. 14 Date

Banquet workers at Walt Disney World have reportedly been informed by The Walt Disney Company that there will be layoffs in their department starting December 14, 2003.

It is not known who will be laid off or how many Cast Members will lose their jobs until Disney makes an announcement, expected on Wednesday.

Gee, what an unexpected surprise from Disney just in time for the holidays for those Cast Members.
:unhappy:

Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Could it be that The Walt Disney Company doesn't like being compared to The Grinch That Stole Christmas?

According to WFTV.com, last-minute negotiations are going on now which could save the jobs of 118 people who work at Walt Disney World as bartenders and banquet workers.

A union spokesman says Disney told them, if they put off speaking about the layoffs for one day, Disney would sit down at the negotiation table one more time.

Well I should certainly hope so!
It amazes me that Disney would even think about laying off a ton of workers just before Christmas.

Let's hope all those jobs are saved!

Not only would it be bad for the families of those laid off -- no matter when it might happen -- but the timing of any layoffs right now would put the Disney company in a very bad light and make for bad public relations in the press.

Great news!

Disney World, banquet workers reach agreement, no layoffs

Quick quote:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Walt Disney World and its banquet workers have reached an agreement that will avoid layoffs, company and union officials said Tuesday.

The banquet workers approved the agreement by a 155-5 vote.

Disney had proposed laying off 118 of the resort's 205 servers and bartenders in August in an effort to better adjust to the seasonality of the banquet business. But union leaders saw the effort as a way for Disney to switch workers from full-time to part-time status and deny them medical insurance coverage, which is one of the fastest-growing expenses for the resort.

The tactic also was seen as a precursor for negotiations next year for a new contract covering about half of Disney World's 51,000 workers.
[...]
As part of the agreement, the union agreed that workers could be sent to any area of the resort where they are needed rather than stay in one section. The union also agreed that all banquet workers will have to work 750 hours between Nov. 2 and May 1 or else they will lose their full-time status.

"We found creative solutions and saved people's jobs in the process," Jerry Montgomery, senior vice president of public affairs, said in a statement.
