There's a new post in the guestbook of my website from someone who looked over my whole site. He told me that based on the song clips I have that although my voice is perfect for community theatre, I'm not good enough for the big stuff...that maybe I should rethink my goals...that I'm setting myself up for a big let down. *cry* I know the person meant well and that those outdated voice clips are hardly an example of my very best work, but after getting so much praise from most people, having someone tell me I'm just average is crushing. :(
It reminds me of a sign that was on the wall in my high school theatre teacher's classroom. "Being good is not enough when you dream of being great."

Now I almost don't even want to try for that Disney opencall in May...though honestly, I couldn't give up on theatre even if I wanted to. There's nothing else I can do or have any desire to do. I'm scared....I'm really, genuinely scared...

Can this person tell by listening to a song or someones voice if people will like them? More then likely not. If its not your best work why listen to them?
Dont lose sight of your goals. If you believe in them keep trying. There are alot of negitive people out there. Dont let them get you down.

Use this persons comments to motivate you to do better. Prove him/her wrong.

:D

If those clips aren't your present best work, then forget the comments. After all, you're not done improving yet, are you?  :sleepy: Of course not!

My advice is to grow thick skin for the critics, keep practicing, keep updating your song clips, and keep auditioning. You'll get there ... er, get here I mean!

Hi AngieBelle,

Don't ever let anyone crush your dreams.  You believe in yourself, and good things WILL happen.  Sometimes our dreams and wishes are not fullfilled in the way we first see them.  Sometimes what we see as a failure at first, turns into the best opportunity we ever got.  Sometimes we do have disappointments and we must endure rejection, especially in the music/theatre world.  Sometimes we are just not "right" for the part...but we are perfect for the next one.

I'm a professionally trained vocalist.  I'm also a choir director.  I thought your music showed great potential.  I didn't have time to read your bio on your page.  Have you had voice lessons?  How old are you?

Some tips I give all singers are; Always remember to sing from your diaphram and not your throat.  When you sing stick the tip of your tongue to the back of your bottom teeth.  Never try to sing to high in your range or too low.  Your middle voice is where your best music comes from.

Remember that all the professional singers you hear have had very expensive "fill ins" and the like put in their tracks of music.  They always sound perfect, because the producers make sure that they do.  It is very hard to judge a singer on a poor recording, so please don't place any weight on the guest books post.

Continue to train, to sing and to believe in yourself!  I wish you the best in your endevours!!  :)

Thanks, guys, I feel better. :)

To answer your questions, I'm 21, and I've studied voice on and off since I was 10.  I'm currently taking voice from a grad student in vocal performance.  Over 4 years ago, I made it to the semi finals of the Mid-South Fair Youth Talent Contest singing "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera.  Basically, that means I was in the top 75 of over 500 acts.  And one of the judges even ranked me in the finals- the top 10!

I was so upset to read your post!!  How cruel people can be!  I was reminded of something the Cher said, when asked by an aspiring singer how to "make it", and her response was, "Never take 'no' for an answer.  Just keep trying!"  Believe in yourself and soon others will believe in you too!  Good luck!

Peace,
Mary
