When do you start packing for your Disney trip?

An interesting question was posted by Tammy / Wisconsinmousermom which I'm turning into a poll and moving here, with her permission:

Ok I'm 17 days away can I get out my suitcases?

When do you start packing?  Do you use ziplock bags to compress everything?  Do you take mini sized shampoos and such or do you take the normal size?  Do you take 2 swim suits?  Do you load and pack your car the night before you leave or do you rush around in the morning ramming everything in at the last minute?  What have you forgotten to pack?  What did you pack that you never even took out of your suitcase?

So, once again, here are your choices:
  • The night before
  • A couple of days before
  • A week before
  • 2 weeks before
  • 3-4 weeks before
  • I never unpacked from my last trip!

Tell us what you think! Please reply here (and answer the questions Tammy brought up) after voting in the poll above.

:) Thanks Rich for the marvey idea to change this question into a poll!

Well I voted...3-4 weeks before, because I have to admit, don't tell my husband...he thinks I'm already obcessing about everything, my dd's suitcase was almost completely packed last week!

Posted by: Tigger58 on April 13, 2003 3:28 am/pm

I  usually  start  about  a week  before!
I dont have that many  clothes to pack earlier
than  that....

I also have last minutes things to put in the morning of  so I do not load the car the day  before!
I cant remember that I have forgotten  anything thus  far!

Posted by: Nysie on April 13, 2003 9:38 am/pm

I usually pack 1 week before! I tell my DDs not to wear anything they want to pack about 1 week before. That way I know it is clean, and in their suitcase, and we're not trying to wash it the night before!! I also have everything packed and ready to go the night before our flight!
Posted by: Liv2CdWorld on April 15, 2003 2:34 am/pm

I'll usually pack at least one week before.  It depends on when we are going.  Usually when we go, it's still too cold for shorts so I can pack all of our cloths well before the trip.

I don't use ziplocks to pack clothes, but I use them to put in the shampoo/soap, laundry detergent.....anything that could cause a mess if broken.

  I am so excited just before our Disney trips I pack for weeks.  I make sure to bring only the essentials.  That way I can shop til I drop!
Posted by: sandybeach on April 24, 2003 10:08 am/pm

I'm hopeless. I always pack the day/night before. I usually make lists of what to pack about 2 weeks before we go.

Posted by: addicted2disney on April 27, 2003 11:54 am/pm

I am obessed and I can not wait to go.  I packed this morning and I am leaving in 12 days.  You would think I am leaving tomorrow if you saw my suitcase.  My son's has been done for a week already.  I'm not excited, am I?   :Oo:
Posted by: TikiDave on May 05, 2003 4:48 am/pm

We usually get the suitcases out 4-6 weeks out :Oo: . We also get travel size bottles for shampoo and travel size toothpaste. We bought a new car( 2002 sunfire ), so we didn't rent a car this trip, and found out how small the trunk is with 5 people in the car  . We had to limit what we were going to wear.
So our planning as far as packing is concerned, starts at least a month out.

Now as far as reservations......... :D

Posted by: sorcererkev on May 06, 2003 12:05 am/pm

We've got another 117 days to go and the Mrs. and I are already talking about what to take.  In fact, we just bought new luggage.

But we normally start packing about a week before, just a little bit at a time.

I usually take out the suitcase a few months before to put in items I don't want to forget.  That way if I need to wear any of the clothes  when rewashed they go right back in.  I have never forgotten anything but when I was on my honeymoon in 2000 I overpacked and never wore one pair of long pants or sweater that I had brought, my 3 suitcases could have been reduced to one.  Disneyn :minnie:

I never unpacked my small overnight bag from our last trip in March! and I'm going next week! So I choose the last one.
Posted by: Camping Cat on June 03, 2003 12:30 am/pm

I voted for "I never unpacked from my last trip!".  What I meant by that is that I have a big Mickey tote bag that stays packed with things we only use at WDW such as small Disney back packs, fanny packs, RADP pins, disposable ponchos, etc.  I start putting things aside months before our trip.  I have a travel box that I toss in things I know we won't use before the trip or things I have bought specifically for the, batteries for the camera, travel sized toiletries, new socks, moleskin, etc.  I have several packing lists in my computer for different seasons at WDW and whether we are camping or staying in a resort.  I am totally obsessed. :-)

Yoo Hoo, Jan!

If you don't mind, please share your packing lists with all of us here! ( Post the camping one in the Fort Wilderness area and the resort one in the WDW area. )

I would love to Rich, but there is a problem.  I should have said that I DID have lists.  We recently lost our hard drive and I lost my lists.  I know, I know....I should have backed them up. :-/  I'm working on reconstructing them and will post them when I get them finished.  The camping list might not be much help because, over time, I have pruned from my list the things that stay in the camper and don't need to be packed every time, but I will try to add as many of those items as I can remember.

Well let's see we leave in about  5 weeks. the suietcases from our Dec/Jan. trip never got put away LOL .Already I am packing things like bathing suiets, wait I'm going too the beach for July 4th better pull them out.Rain gear is away, extra tennis shoes, new socks, undies(DH always buys that stuff new for a disney trip   )main clothes will get packed abut 3 days before we go.
Posted by: Jimmalru80 on June 05, 2003 7:11 am/pm

While we leave on 6/25, I have just about everything ready to go. The rest of the family takes their time, especially my son (19). He will be putting the finishing touches on his bag the night before.
Posted by: feenie on June 08, 2003 2:48 am/pm

:) I have been gathering things on my packing list like shampoo and toothbrushes since we made our reservation last Sept!  ( my hubby thinks I'm nuts! )   He won't actually let me begin to pack until a few weeks before!  but I'm ready!!! :)
Posted by: BrerRabbit on June 09, 2003 8:13 am/pm

We are leaving for our trip to the Poly on June 19 so I will probably start planning what needs to go and packing a few things this weekend. I will do the majority of the packing Tuesday and Wednesday.  I work best under pressure  :eyebrow:   Cant wait to leave. :minnie:
Posted by: JenAnderson on June 11, 2003 8:10 am/pm

I chose the "never unpack" option! :)   Actually, I put a bunch of stuff in a bin to be sure they are ready and not forgotten on the next trip.  Right now in the bin there are the park brochures (we love to constantly review the old ones - especially on the plane), I also have our lanyards and pins we will want to trade, our $1.00 Wal-Mart rain ponchos, a 3 ring binder that I always bring (filled with print outs I find on restaurants, resorts, tips, etc. - anything I might want to know about Disney :) ).

In addition to this, I love to plan and begin adding to the bin months before the month I know we are going.  One month before we go I lay the suitecases out in the basement and begin to actually pack it all up.  My whole family thinks that I am crazy when I get started on the bin and even crazier when I am pretty much packed up 4 weeks out!  I am always so ready to be there that I can't stand the wait and packing seems to be one of the things that helps me pass the time!

Posted by: WebTink on June 26, 2003 10:45 am/pm

I really, really, really want to start packing RIGHT NOW!!!  I mean, fer cryin' out loud, it's only 5.5 weeks away!!!  But those durned kids have summer camp to go to mid-July and we have a family reunion the 4th of July weekend, so I just can't get started on my REAL vacation yet!   But I have LISTS!  Boy, do I have lists!  I found a check-list online ( don't ask--I can't remember where! ), and modified it for our family and printed one out for each person.  (It had BABY stuff on it!  I don't want to take BABY stuff!  Yikes! No more babies!  LOL! )  Anyway, it's a Word document if anyone wants to see it; I'd be happy to email it to you.  ( Note to self:  update email address in DisneyEcho profile to reflect new HIGH SPEED INTERNET ADDRESS!  Woo hoo!  Disney and Broadband all in one summer! )

Depends on what it is.  I packed my tickets as soon as I got them (and I've prepaid for PI, DQ, AP and Cirque tickets (as well as US/IOA, including HHN tickets)- they're all in an envelope), so they've been packed for about a year prior to the trip.

I have a special bag for toiletries that pretty much stays packed all the time - I used to business travel a lot, so that helped.

Clothes, though, I wait until the last minute, after checking the weather - we normally travel Oct/Nov, and you never know then!

Posted by: WebTink on July 07, 2003 11:32 am/pm

Can I start packing yet???  It's only 27 days till we go!
Posted by: ladymarganne on July 07, 2003 2:50 am/pm

For us, and living in south Florida, packing isn't much of a problem, as we always drive...4 hours... and keep a few things ready to go! For example, we have one suitcase packed with toiletries, Disney t-shirts, shorts, pants, sweats, plus some extra underwear. Then, in a large Mickey bag I have several ziplock bags wich hold our AP's, poncho's, MNSSHP tickets, $100, pin lanyards, and ziplock bags of coffee, tea, sugar, and coffeemate (we usually use cream, but this is just in case), plus a small coffeemaker. These 2 bags are ready at all times! So whenever we have a trip coming, I just wait until 2 days ahead, pack whatever else we need and we're off! Oh, yes! Our confirmation letters go in the Mickey bag as soon as they arrive!  :flag2:

Yoo Hoo, ladymarganne!

That's a great way to be ready to go at the drop of a mouse-eared hat, ladymarganne!

And by the way, even though you joined the Disney Echo some time ago, this is your first post, so it is my first opporTOONity to welcome you! We're glad you joined us here! I've enjoyed reading your messages on the Disney Dollarless list.

Here's a Minnie-style pair of EchoEars just for you, ladymarganne:

Thanks for joining the Disney Echo and please share more of your Disney tips with us here!

Thanks for the *Welcome*, Rich! It's a pleasure to be here and I do intend to be more active from now on. And, thanks for the *EchoEars*! They're adorable!!!
Oh, can call me *Maggie*!! :flag2:

Okay, Maggie it is! I updated your signature to reflect your request, too.

Yoo Hoo, Maggie/ladymarganne!

...or perhaps I should call you aladymarganne, hmmmm?

That's what you were calling yourself way back in January 9, 2002, the day after you joined the Disney Echo under that different name. So, uh, what's goin' on? You think you can just post under any old name you want here? Huh?

And I went and gave you Disney EchoEars back then, just like Rich did yesterday. Maybe that's it... you're a Disneyana collector and you'd think ol' Mick wouldn't notice, huh?

Posted by: ladymarganne on July 08, 2003 4:07 am/pm

Awww, Mickey! So sorry about that! We changed to cable shortly afterward and I lost all my passwords, etc. But, I am sooooo very glad that you remember me. You know you're my very favorite *mouse* in the whole wide world! As for being a Disney bet! I wish you could see our house! Disney collectibles all over the place and a special guestroom/bathroom done in Tropical Mickey with pins and collectables all over the place! Why! Even our dining room has Gourmet Mickey settings and you and Minnie have a special spot in our living room!!  :flag2:

Actually, Mickey, she can.

Anybody can post under any name they want to here! Or did you forget that?

Yoo Hoo, ladymarganne and Rich!

Aw, gosh, ladymarganne, I sure am sorry! Do you forgive me for getting my fur kinda ruffled over this?

Thanks for collectin' all my stuff. I'll be over to pick it up in the mornin'! Huh-ha!

And I'm sure Minnie will be thrilled when I tell her that we're invited to your place for dinner! Boy, oh boy!

Posted by: ladymarganne on July 08, 2003 4:54 am/pm two are always forgiven, and you're more than welcome to come to dinner anytime you're free, but now, as far as those collectables, etc., go.....well, you can just forget it, pal!  It took years to collect them! They're mine, all mine....and all paid for, too! So, there.... :tounge:

Posted by: jobro912 on July 21, 2003 11:14 am/pm

Well, I answered a couple of days before, but it depends.  This trip (We are leaving Saturday), I will do most of my packing Saturday afternoon as our flight is not until 7:30 Saturday night.

Most of the time I do an urgent night before packing gig.  YAWN...Wipes me out.

Posted by: utilidor27 on July 24, 2003 12:32 am/pm

It usually takes us a week to get everything done, because you always get the suitcase done and then - oops we forgot something - and then you have to open it up again. You learn your lesson after awhile.
Posted by: WebTink on July 24, 2003 3:21 am/pm

I guess we know when Minnie starts packing for her trip to the Polynesian!  10 days before! tee hee!  ( Sneaking into my carry-on!  Indeed! )

Posted by: debenj on Aug. 03, 2003 10:35 am/pm

All I have to do is add my clothes and I am ready to go!  I have seperate items that remain in my suitcase (this saves a lot of time)  I use zip lock bags for just about everything & take along a couple of large trash bags for dirty clothes & they are great for wrapping your spare shoes/sandals to keep them from getting your other items dirty.
Posted by: Mary on Aug. 06, 2003 9:33 am/pm

I have to admit, I am constantly packing or preparing for Disney!!  As soon as we book a trip, I start squirreling away new outfits (buying them as overstocks, end of season)!  Then about 4 months out, I prepare the "LIST"  :D  !!!!!  Actual packing begins about 3 weeks out with the final stuff going in the night before (ie: meds).  I know it is obsessive, and DH knows better than to question me about it
Posted by: MKBaughan on Aug. 17, 2003 12:24 am/pm

I start packing about a month in advance!  But, I still find things in my suitcase that I left unpacked from the last trip to WDW!!!    I am actually rather sad about it, but I won't be able to go until hopefully next year now...  Got all the way to Orlando this year, and actually on the property, but, wound up not going to the parks.... bummer!  At least I saw the castle from the monorail!!!!  I am planning to go to Disneyland in 2005 for the 50th birthday celebration... I am 6 months older than DL, and I think it would be a great place to turn the big 50!!!! :wink2:   Also, if I am driving, I pack the car the night before.... that way, we can just leave in the morning!

Posted by: Goofyteer on Aug. 17, 2003 1:09 am/pm

Are you kidding?! I never even really unpack from my previous trips! :sorcerer: I count the days between Disney trips because not only do I love Disney, I love the fact that it's been a comforting constant through my whole life. When the whole world is constantly changing around and sometimes in really frightening ways, it's wonderful to step back into Disney and know it's basically just as I've always loved it. I've never changed on the inside at all, but the whole world has changed drastically around me, and I love that Disney has stayed the same along with me. It's my home away from home and a gift from God and the one place I can always go where I'm accepted as I am without being mocked. I'm a child stuck in a grown-up body!

I'm also stuck in the seventies but that's another story...wasn't that a wonderful time to be loving Disney?

I pack very light because I love to shop while I'm out there, too! That's one reason it takes so long to raise the money as I always want to raise extra stuff to get those special things you can't get anywhere else. And you know how pricey Disney stuff is! I also always make sure to raise cash for at least one character meal.

I'm also always trying to concoct ways to get myself to WDW a.s.a.p., I always have to plan and pay for it in advance cuz it's so pricey. On my next trip I want to stay at Pop Century in a seventies area!  :wwww:

Although I do not think you need LOTS of time to pack, I do think it is a good idea to start a packing list well in advance.  Start your list when you know you are going and that way, you can add things as you go.  If you follow the list while packing, crossing off everything as you pack it, you shouldn't forget anything you really want or need to bring... :)

Make a copy of that list before you cross things off. You can use the copy at the resort when you're packing up to leave for home, so you don't leave anything there forgotten!

I tend to make lists about 3 months before I pack....and I pack a week before (although I plan for at least a year about the whole trip :) )
My DH packs his things the night before, but I can't do that...I tend to forget way too much if I do that.

Our next trip is this November and I already have my clothes seperated out so I know which things I really want to take to Disney....DH just laughs at me  :o

Posted by: eeyore13166 on Sep. 22, 2003 8:34 am/pm

If I could get away with it, I'd start now...but then the suitcases would be sitting there :tounge: teasing and taunting :tounge:  me till November 30.  So a couple days is all my DW allows. :(
Posted by: CarolKoster on Sep. 24, 2003 12:02 am/pm

I voted "the night before", but Rich would answer differently for himself.  I try to anticipate only what I'll need with some apparel overpacking in case of hot and sticky weather there'll be extra fresh clothes to change into after a midday bath or shower at the hotel.  Some sort of real life encroaches on me just prior to trip time, so it's just about last 24-hours or so leading up to departure that life lets go and my mind frees up and I can think about what to take.  I try to think firmly about "less is more" when packing because all that lugging around is no fun.
Posted by: ItsAllAboutMe on Sep. 27, 2003 12:08 am/pm

Packing!   Well, let's see!   My husband will start to pack next saturday morning about 2 hours before we leave.  It will take him 30 minutes at the most.

I - on the other hand - have been making my list of things to bring with for the last 7 weeks.

I also have a graph of the different days and the different events and parties we will be going to and what i want to wear and how to coordinate things with each other.

I will also pack my big Disney coffee mug for him and my BIG Costco cup to make my daily iced coffee in.   He laughs at me when i pack them..... but he sure is glad when i have them there for him to use!

I only bought ONE new shirt to wear!  (ok...and a new purse - but that was only 5 bucks! )

I am wondering if i should go ahead and get us 2 way radios since he doesnt use a cell phone.  Any opinions there?

Flo :happydance:  :pixiedust:  :pixiedust:

Posted by: CarolKoster on Sep. 27, 2003 9:11 am/pm

About packing two-way radios:  Every family's mileage will vary on this, depends on how many in your family and their ages and how you divide up.  For our family of 3 it was cute to have the radio, for awhile.  Michael and I were on Tom Sawyer Island and Rich went to ride Big Thunder Mtn.  We chatted the whole time, including when Rich was on the ride!  Michael and I were in the Fort and I could see Rich as his train whizzed past us, that was kinda cool.  Michael, on the other hand, was too excited to be playing in a fort and didn't care about the radio.  Then Rich made his way over to us and we swapped and I rode Big Thunder and Rich babysat (Michael just didn't feel brave enough for that type of coaster).  We chatted back and forth all the time.  Now, others can hear you and you can hear others on some frequencies, so play around with the channels to get a bit more privacy and less interference.  Depending on how much anyone has to carry the radios can be helpful or extra weight to carry and extra personal items to take inventory of at all times.  They can be a blessing or a pain or a curse.  If you bring them do one novelty "Hey, I'm over here, can you hear me?  Yahoo this is fun!" interchange and then agree among yourselves when under what conditions to use them in the parks, and who will tote and take constant inventory so they are not left behind or lost.  Bring extra batteries from home, likely cheaper than replenishing at theme park prices, and agree upon who lugs the spare batteries around the parks. ;-)

I'm already all packed for my Disney Christmas trip! Actually I'm travelling light, as I intend to bring a whole wad of extra dough with me to blow on stuff to buy once I'm out there and am setting aside enough cash for one Disney Christmas character dinner and three more character meals throughout the rest of my stay. I intend to come home with at least a good sized handful of booty I've bought
