November 18, 2003 represents the 75th Birthdays of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse (and Pegleg Pete, too ) .

Thank you Walt Disney for creating these characters and bringing them to life.  Thank you Walt Disney Company for perpetuating them.  Happy birthday, and many more, to Mickey, Minnie, Pegleg Pete and all the Disney characters we enjoy.

What are your memories of Mickey and/or Minnie Mouse, either in cartoons, movies, home video, TV, comic books, collectibles, theme park appearances or character meet and greets?  What would you tell Mickey or Minnie, or animators or management at Disney, if you could send them a message for Mickey and Minnie's 75th Birthday?  What is the secret of these characters' longevity?  Have they served their purpose, is it time to revamp or perhaps phase out these characters for something more relevant to today?  Are Mickey and Minnie too "cheesey" (no pun intended! ) or too dated, are they too sweet and saccharine, too diluted, too corporate symbol and not enough of their on-screen personalities as originally created, are they pushed into the background too much or are Mickey and Minnie still major "stars" at Disney?  Are Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse over-rated, or under-rated?Have they changed for the better, so-so, or worse since their creation and premiere in 1928?  Should they be edgier?  Are they just fine the way they are?  What is there too much of regarding Mickey and Minnie, too little of?  Does TV's "House of Mouse" cartoon series do Mickey and Minnie justice?  What memories do you have of introducing Mickey and Minnie Mouse, in any form or media, to your young family members or kids that you know of?  Has collecting Mickey Mouse memorabilia gotten out of hand, too much stuff on the market that it's "junk" that doesn't have any lasting value, or is your collection appreciating?  What's your favorite Mickey or Minnie Mouse object or piece of memorabilia?

And last:  If you want to write a greeting or message "to" Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse or even Pegleg Pete feel free to do so.

Here's some birthday cake and plates, plenty for all...if you want some cake just click on the emoticon for it and serve yourself.  Here's the pastry chef to serve you personally:

The "Disney Anthem": Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and the GangHere's the background to when I first heard this song. It was the night of Saturday, September 26, 1992, when I was at Walt Disney World on the last night of the 1st Official Disneyana Convention. The occasion was the closing banquet of the convention and all of us Disneyana ConventionEars were in the Fantasia Ballroom of Disney's Contemporary Resort Convention Center.

One part of that night's entertainment will always have a special place in my memory. The Disney folks showed us a sweet and touching film which had stills and footage from Walt's life and work, accompanied by the wonderful song many of you might have heard which is an ode to Walt Disney. Dick Nunis said this is the "Company Song," played only at internal Company gatherings and stockholders' meetings, until that evening. Nunis told us the conference was so successful that he considered Disney enthusiasts and collectors in attendance part of the Disney family, and so having a performance of this song for us would be appropriate. Since then they also presented it for the ConventionEars at the 1994 Official Disneyana Conventions and it was later performed by Paul Williams on the Mouseketeers Reunion TV show (which used to be seen in reruns occasionally on the Disney Channel). However, Paul didn't sing all of the lyrics that Dick Nunis sang for us in September 1994.

Dick said it was written by an unknown Cast Member and they wished they knew who that was so they could give him or her credit for it. It is sung like an anthem/ballad, slow affectionate tempo and tone. Get the hankies out, because I'm going to share the lyrics of the song with you now.

Late one rainy night
down in Missouri
huddled in his tiny room
an artist drew impressions
by glowing candlelight
of a friendly little creature
who had come to share his night.

How was he to know the destiny
guided by his moving hand?
He created someone
who'd be loved across the land.
The first of many faces
that his gifted hand would draw.

Mickey Mouse,
Donald Duck,
Goofy and the gang.
Your father was a friend of mine
though he never knew my name.

He painted colored fairy tales
with a stroke of his magic brush
and brought to life the characters
we've grown to love so much.

He made it all so beautiful
in the world of Disneyland.
Mickey Mouse, (Mickey Mouse)
Donald Duck, (Donald Duck)
You've made a lot of friends.

Heaven must have come his way one night
and filled his mind with magic dreams.
He built a land of paradise
with so much love and care
and left it all behind him
for everyone to share.

Mickey Mouse,
Donald Duck,
Goofy and the gang.
Your father was a friend of mine
though he never knew my name.

He painted colored fairy tales
with a stroke of his magic brush
and brought to life the characters
we've grown to love so much.

He made it all so beautiful
in the world of Disneyland.
Mickey Mouse, (Mickey Mouse)
Donald Duck, (Donald Duck)
You've made a lot of friends,
A lot of friends.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Pegleg Pete and to the memories of Walt and Lillian Disney, Roy Disney Walt's brother, and to everyone past and present and future at The Walt Disney Company:  Happy 75th Birthday, many happy returns, and may those who perpetuate the characters continue to put genuine heart and care and respect into them so future generations can truly enjoy and embrace something real in the world of "licensed characters".  Thanks for the decades and generations of smiles, and may you continue for many more to come. :mickey:  :minnie:  :birthdaycake:

I saw Mickey live and in person with Disney archivist Dave Smith on ABC-TV's Good Morning America this morning. They were at Disneyland celebrating Mickey's birthday. I guess it was too early for Minnie to get up, because she didn't appear (but they did mention that it was her birthday, too).

Mickey was told that for a 75-year-old he didn't even have any grey in his fur.
LOL

Also today, Radio Disney has been celebrating Mickey & Minnie's birthday. Both of them appeared on BB Goode's midday show. BB was doing what sounded like live reports with Mickey about the 75 Years of Mickey statues appearing today at WDW.

Actually, Pete is older than Mickey and Minnie, having begun his film career in the Alice Comedies. According to John Grant's Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Characters (second edition, p. 16), Pete's firs screen role was probably Alice Solves the Puzzle of 1925.

What do you expect, villians always cheat and get a head start! :depp:

Pegleg Pete, shame on you for misleading Carol into thinking you share your birthday with Mickey & Minnie!

WESH-TV asked Mickey Mouse if he finds himself looking back after 75 years.

"Gosh, heck no. I'm always looking forward, you know. It's a great big beautiful tomorrow," said Mickey.

You might think that's just his optiMOUSEtic style, but there are many good bright things on the horizon in Mickey's future.
  • A new line of comic books stars Mickey mouse
  • He's appeared on DVD and is slated for more
  • He's getting his very own postage stamp next year
  • Two feature films will be appearing in a theater near you starring Mickey
  • and Mickey has an even higher profile than usual in the Magic Kingdom now.
