Police have recovered a valuable stolen Mickey Mouse painting, but one is still missing

There's nothing Mickey Mouse about case stolen paintings case, although they involve masterpieces of Mickey.

Las Vegas police have recovered one of two valuable Mickey Mouse paintings stolen from an art gallery on the Strip.

The painting, "Seaside Romance'' by Christian Riese Lassen, was found after someone called police to say they had purchased it. Police say the person didn't know the painting was stolen until they heard news reports about the theft from the Lassen Art Galerie last month. The painting has a price tag of $395,000.

The other painting that is still missing is "Sorcerer of the Seas." Paul Olsen, the director of the Lassen Galerie in Las Vegas says the two paintings stolen from his gallery are worth a combined total of nearly $800,000.

The 30-by-20-inch paintings with vivid, bright colors took Lassen about six months to create in 1994. "They're not just Mickey Mouse paintings; they are masterpieces," said Olson. Las Vegas police said Monday they hope alerting the public will prevent the thief from selling the paintings on the black market.

"It's not something he can put on eBay or go down to the local art gallery and try to sell," Detective Jon Morris said.

The police have announced they are looking for 47-year-old James Villamor, who is wanted for questioning in connection with the stolen paintings.

Anyone with any information should contact Crime Stoppers in Las Vegas at (702) 385-5555.

Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Here's a better view of the "Sorcerer of the Seas" painting which police are still searching for:

And here is the recovered painting which features Mickey and Minnie, called "Seaside Romance":

"Seaside Romance" will not be returned to the Las Vegas gallery -- it will be for sale in Hawaii, instead.

Each painting is 30 inches by 20 inches and took artist Christian Riese Lassen six months each to create in 1994. The originals were done on Trovicil, not canvas like their reproductions. They are believed to be the most expensive Mickey Mouse works in the world.

The two paintings were first reported as stolen on September
15th.

Appraiser Richard Ruskin places the total value of both paintings at nearly $1 million!

I've got some rough Minnie drawings I did for one of the Magic Artist Cd-Rom games. No-one's ever tried to steal them though.

Do you think they're worth a million or two? :eyebrow:
