Eisner: Disney could buy Henson and Muppets soon

Michael Eisner said on Wednesday that a deal to buy Muppet-maker Jim Henson Co. from Germany's EM.TV & Merchandising AG could happen soon.

That confirmed a report by Reuters on March 7 that Disney was the favorite among a number of bidders to buy Henson and could pay $70 million for it after more than a decade of sporadic talks to buy Muppets Kermit the Frog and friends.

Asked by a shareholder at Disney's annual meeting in Denver whether Disney would buy Henson, Eisner said in Webcast comments: "I would not be surprised to hear that there would be an announcement soon. I wouldn't be surprised that the Walt Disney Co. would be finally culminating years of romance."

The shareholder asked whether Disney would pay $100 million to $200 million for Henson and Eisner said he would be surprised by a price "anywhere near" that range.

Well, Michael Eisner didn't get his dream of buying the Muppets. EM.TV & Merchandising AG said on Wednesday it will sell the Jim Henson Company, the maker of the Muppets, to the children of its founder Jim Henson for $89 million.

This brings to a close the long auction going on for years, The company had been sold in 2000 for $680 million, so the Henson family nets a tidy profit with this buy-back.

Several companies had wanted to buy the Muppets, including Disney, Sony, Haim Saban, and a group around investor Dean Valentine.

I'm glad the Muppets are staying in the Henson family.

Maybe, just maybe, they won't become so commercialized.  Too many childrens characters (Most Disney excepted) just become selling points and lose their specialness.

Cheers to Kermit and Miss Piggy!  Long may you stay together.
