Yoo Hoo, Echoears!

Mickey has asked me to confirm the following changes at WDW and post it here:

Early Entry (also known as Magic or Surprise Mornings) is cancelled.

Caravan of Characters has started for Disney Resort guests in which Disney Characters meet and greet Resort guests right there at the resorts in the morning. This alternates among resorts, but not all resorts will have the Caravan of Characters visit each day.

Animal Kingdom hours are now from 9 am to 5 pm.

Epcot's Future World is open from 10 am to 7 pm (mostly) and World Showcase is open from noon to 9 pm.

At the Yacht Club Resort, the Yachtsman Steakhouse is open for breakfast and lunch but the Yacht Club Galley is closed.

All of these changes are true, plus many others almost too numerous to list.

If anyone hears any rumors and wants me to check them out, I'll be happy to -- just post them on this thread.

Times are hard at WDW, and the Company is making lots of changes to try and keep their finances in order. I can't say I much like the cutbacks, but I do understand that they are -- for now -- necessary.

[Disclaimer: I'm one of the furloughed cast members, but speak only for myself. I do not squeak for the Mouse.]

Yoo Hoo, Rufus!

Thanks so much for confirming what I heard!

Yes, the changes are necessary. There is a huge downturn of WDW-vacationers (as there is a cutback of folks all over in taking vacations they would have in the past). The security messages WDW has taken are very good to see, even though security has always been at the Disney parks in the past - - just not so obvious. But even security costs money, so for Disney to keep their Guests safe it has to be spent.

So, folks, come on down to your fave Disney park (or even just your local Disney store!) and help out by doing the fun Disney things you know you want to do. It'll help get things back on track - - and you'll be making Disney magical memories at the same time. The more of us that do this, the sooner the Disney parks can get back to the same level we know and love them for.

Yoo Hoo!

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Walt Disney World's public restrooms are now powder-free. The resort has emptied powdered-soap dispensers at its four theme parks and installed new ones containing liquid hand cleaner. Reportedly, it is because of the anthrax scare. The story is right here.

Gee, what's next... cinnamon-free churros? No more pixie dust?

Yoo Hoo!

Also, according to a story in the Orlando Sentinel, Walt Disney's Carrousel of Progress won't be open for any more of the celebration of Walt's birthday - - they say it is now closed (not even shown on the printed park maps). They also report that Michael Eisner will be in WDW during part of December for the celebration.

Yoo Hoo!

It's true, Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress has closed. Despite official statements that it's "closed for rehab," I believe it's closure was dictated by the slowdown, it's low utilization, and the need to make further cost reductions.

While there's nothing to keep this classic attraction from returning -- it's mechanically functional -- the big gap between acts 3 and 4 (now almost 50 years) and the lack of a sponsor for any further revisions suggests that it may well have "turned in" it's last performance.

Quite the sad present for Walt's hundredth birthday.

Yoo Hoo, Rufus!

There's a rumor that Spectromagic will stop running sometime this month and it will stay dark until the summer of next year. A later version of the 100 Years of Magic parade combined with the Christmas parade in the afternoon are rumored to replace it.

The Legend of the Lion King show in the MK is rumored to end sometime around this spring or summer.

Over at the D-MGM Studios the rumor is that the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Playland area is not just closed down for its annual rehab -- wasn’t it down for it’s annual rehab less than a year ago?

The newsletters that Annual Passholders receive reportedly contains news that the new Triceratops Spin attraction will open on December 15th in Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Perhaps another WDW resort will be shut down in the near future? Reports are that some who were trying to get rooms at the Coronado Springs resort were denied reservations to both this as well as the closed French Quarter part of Port Orleans resort.

At Pleasure Island, the PI dancers are rumored to have been laid off.

I heard all this from a mouse who's all ears, but I'm not sure if any of it is true.

Yoo Hoo, Rich!

My, so many rumors! Let me see what I can do.

SpectroMagic may indeed go dark for a time, but no final decision has yet been made. Wouldn't surprise me though, given the circumstances.

There is no "100 Years of Magic Parade," so I don't know what this rumor is about. Do you mean the "Share a Dream Come True Parade," now showing at the MK each afternoon?

Legend of the Lion King is rumored to end and be replaced with "Mickey's Philharmagic," a 3D film that might well reflect some of the spirit of Tokyo Disneyland's Mickey Mouse Revue. I would expect that any such rehab would have to wait for the economic situation to improve.

I don't recall the rehab schedule for the Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playground, but it may have been accellerated or simply closed to save the cast member positions it required. I know the Toontown playground gets terrific wear and tear, and often has to be rehabbed earlier than planned.

There's a big jump from being unable to get a reservation at a resort and having that resort close. Coronado Springs is a convention resort, and often gets booked solid by convention attendees. Not that we probably couldn't move non-convention folks to other vacant moderate resorts, but I'd expect Caribbean Beach Resort to close first, as it doesn't have conventions booked.

The Pleasure Island Explosion Dancers are indeed gone, as is the live New Years Eve show. Also, Hathaway Brown has been grounded.

Stay tooned, more change is inevitable!

That is probably what the rumor is referring to.

No New Years Eve show? Do folks still celebrate NYE every night, but without the show?

Kungaloosh!

Just a little change, small to say the least... NOT!

Thanks, Rufus.

Yoo Hoo!

Okay, here's a new rumor!

Seems that Disney is now telling some folks that Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress (CoP for short) is not closed, but instead is undergoing maintenance.

If this is true, perhaps it was indeed closed permanently at first, but Disney received too many complaints and bad publicity (closing a long-running attraction that actually has video of Walt in it and Walt's "fingerprints" all over the show itself, if you know what I mean). It might be that they are bring it back in response to this, and just saying it was closed for maintenance.

Ronnie (TDC Iago) posted an interesting bit of info about this on rec.arts.disney.parks. Ronnie, by the way, is part of the Disney Echo! Her excellent website, Iago's Disney Page, is a member of the Disney Echo Affiliates. (Your Disney-related website can be, too! See http://DisneyEcho.tripod.com/Affiliates.) Here's Ronnie's comment:

Quote
Here's something interesting.  The official website reads:
"Scheduled Maintanence
Carousel of Progress operates seasonally."

(Yes, they really spelled "maintenance" that way.) Since when has CoP operated seasonally?  As far as I can remember, it's always been open year-round, though the hours may change.  Is this a new addition to the website, or has it said this for a long time?

Guess what?  Timekeeper has the same notice.  If you search the site for the phrase "scheduled maintanence," those are the only 2 MK attractions to show up.  This may be their standard answer about closed attractions now.  By saying this, they don't commit to *anything*.  I have to question whether any
maintenance is really going on, though.

Let's stay all ears and keep our eyes open to see what happens with CoP!
:shy:

Yoo Hoo!

The Carousel of Progress is now listed as a "Seasonal Closure," along with Timekeeper and the Mike Fink Keelboats, according to the current issue of the Tell-A-Cast.

First they said CoP was closed for rehab, but it wasn't on the rehab schedule or budget. Ronnie points out that the Disney website -- a source Disney has officially discredited as being a major source of bad information -- now lists it as down for seasonal maintenance, but no work is being done. Now this "seasonal closure" stuff.

Within one calendar week, I had one WDW manager tell me CoP would never reopen, and another with like sincerity, tell me it would be reopening as soon as attendance returned to normal. Personally, I don't believe either of them.

I think the correct status of CoP (and Timekeeper) is "Limbo." They could be reopened, espeically if other nearby attractions happen to close (like Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear), and the crowds demand additional capacity. They could just as easily begin disassembly without further notice. I don't believe that a final decision has been made, and won't until one of these two things happen.

Let's face it, this is a very strange time for WDW, and nobody really knows how long it will be until hotel occupancy and restaurant and retail sales return to "normal." In fact, you could add *me* to the list of "seasonal closures," as it's not clear if I'll be called back to work or let go.

I love clear answers to simple questions, but right now there's very little that's clear, alas.
