Before then, I had a GE portable tape player (you've seen them: they're those flat ones that lie on their back with one big square speaker over the tape insert and a pull-out plastic handle around the button area)

Hey, that was my first cassette player/recorder, too! But the one I just threw out was my second, a Sony. Much smaller and took quite a lot of bangs and dents before it finally stopped working.

I still have my record player from the early 70s but rarely use it anymore. Its stack feature stopped working long ago.

You, too? Remember back when for a while they sold those little player/recorders with microphones you could plug in to sing along? (And drive everybody crazy with for the longest time... LOL )

This talk just reminded me of something: remember how for a brief period of time they started making record players that were vertical? Man, didn't THOSE ever look weird in the stores?! LOL
They were supposed to save wear and tear on records. I never did find out how well they supposedly worked, though.
