Tonight I thought I'd try connecting to this emuck thing that's described on disneyecho's main page. This was the second time I've ever tried it as the first time was around a month ago but I had logged back off right away because no one was there. I pulled up the instructions and got on through telnet. I typed "connect guest guest" just as the instructions told me to. But I got the following message.

We're sorry, but due to abuses from users at your site, we have been forced to deny guest access to EMuck from your site for an indefinite period.

I tried again. Same message. Am I doing something wrong to log on or did something happen? I don't understand. But I'm really disappointed either way.

:sniffle:

First, I'd like to explain about the message you received:

The EMuck game server has been in operation since 1995.  During its existance, we have had more than a few individuals that have been banned from using the system due to immature behavior, harassment of other users, or attempted hacking of the game server or its host.  The easiest way for us to remove a player is by removing that player's character, which will prevent the person from logging in.

However, EMuck allows "guest access" for people that would like to "test drive" the game server.  Some banned indivuals decided that this is a good "back door" to allow them to continue their bad behavior.  EMuck has, therefore, instituted a "guest block" for known IP's for which banned players have been caught returning.

The problem is that some IP addresses are dynamic (which means that a user's IP address can change at any time, or sometimes every time a person connects to their ISP).  Thus, the "guest block" needs to be for an entire IP subnet or ISP subdomain, especially if the banned user is insistent on wanting to return where he/she is unwanted.

All that being said...

The ban on your particular ISP was added a few years ago.  I have relaxed that particular ban, since it is very unlikely that the player or players that had been dismissed will be trying to access EMuck any time in the future; hopefully they have gone on with their lives.

I understand. Thanks for the prompt reply.

So when is it that you guys use this program and everything? I'd like to know so I can try it and see what it's like. Are there scheduled times or anything like that?

There's not as much activity there as there was years ago. But everything is still in place and can be used at any time. I personally stopped hosting chats there a few years ago because I don't have time for that anymore. But Rufus kept it up along with some others after I stopped. When he gets back from vacation, he'll have more answers for you.

In the meantime, all Disney EchoEars are welcome to use the real-time chat features (and role-playing, too) of emuck.com whenever they'd like.

EMuck isn't used as much as it used to.  The technology is from the early 1990's, before the web and HTML/HTTP.  It was an easy and low-bandwidth way for people to chat together in real time.

There are now places like this forum that have more up-to-date interfaces and are easily accessed via the web.  The people that still connect to EMuck occasionally are mostly old friends that want to say "Hi!" that were there "way back when" (eight years is a long time for this medium).

We still run EMuck because it's the name of the domain [smile!] and because it doesn't take up much resources to keep it going for as long as people want to connect to it.

Yoo Hoo, Chris!

Yes, it certainly is all right. And now that lar3ry has taken off the site ban to your area you can connect as a guest - - and even apply there for a free Emuck account, too. Anyone can chat there, anytime.
