Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

I'm awaiting my copy of the November Mickey Monitor, the newsletter for Walt Disney World Annual Passholders. But I've heard that it includes a discount for AP holders on WDW Resort rooms.

If you are a WDW Annual Passholder, ask for Code AMI and get special discounted rates at select Walt Disney World resorts for check-ins now through 11/24/03 and 11/28/03-12/26/03. Discounts range from approximately 30-45% off regular rack rates. Availability seems to be very limited, so you may need to be flexible about dates and/or resorts to take advantage of these rates.

An example of these rates: You can get a Savannah View at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge for $149 through 12/26/03  (excluding 11/25-27). See MouseSavers at http://www.mousesavers.com/disneyresorts.html#ap for more discount examples.

The next Mickey Monitor is scheduled for February 2004.

Below you'll find the contents of the August 2003 Mickey Monitor and you can see the May 2003 edition, if you click here.

Mickey Monitor - August 2003

You can't keep a good duck down at Mickey's PhilharMagic

Our favorite Mouse may be the star conductor of Mickey's PhilharMagic, but it's Donald Duck who'll end up taking you on a fantastic journey.

Opening this October, the new Magic Kingdom® attraction will send you and the flustered fowl through a smorgasbord of Disney musical moments, from Peter Pan's London flight and Simba's savannah frolics to dinnertime at the Beast's castle and playtime with Ariel under the sea. It's pure Disney magic you'll love to experience again and again.

An entirely new 3-D experience
The new immersive 3-D technology that flies you from classic to classic is so astonishing, a new word was invented to describe it: "DisneyVision."

"It's the most ambitious 3-D adventure ever created," Kevin Rafferty, Senior Show Writer for Walt Disney Imagineering tells us. "The screen is so big, the theater seems to magically 'disappear' and pull you into this musical 'vortex' with Donald."

At 25 feet high by 100 feet wide, the seamless, wrap-around DisneyVision screen is the largest of it's kind. You'll feel as if you're right there with your animated friends.

In-theater effects keep you giggling
New in-theater special effects also draw you into the show. "Mickey's PhilharMagic was created for the entire family to enjoy, especially young children," Kevin adds. "We have what we call 'reach moments,' in which Disney friends appear in front of you as if you could touch them."

Mickey and his orchestra come full circle
Many passholders fondly remember the beloved Mickey Mouse Revue, originally presented in the same Fantasyland® theater three decades ago. This Audio-Animatronics musical also starred Mickey as conductor.

"I'd like to think of Mickey's PhilharMagic as the next generation of the Mickey Mouse Revue," Kevin comments. "So many of the characters are back again, but using entirely new technology," he says.

Regardless of all the bells and whistles, timeless Disney music and fantasy are at the heart of Mickey's PhilharMagic. "It's exactly the sort of thing our Guests love," Kevin adds. "And what we love."

Passholder Pin Alert!
An exclusive Mickey's PhilharMagic pin will be available to all Passholders at Town Square Exposition Hall in the Magic Kingdom® Park beginning September 20 for just $10.50 (plus tax). Quantities will be limited.

Disney's Brother Bear roars into theaters November 1

When you're finished creating Halloween this year, you'll still have one more treat to look forward to.

Brother Bear, the third feature produced entirely at Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida, premieres the Saturday after Halloween in theaters nationwide. The film marks a return to a true Disney specialty: animal stories rich in heart, humor, great songs and unforgettable characters.

"Disney classics like Bambi and The Lion King had emotion at their core," the film's Producer Chuck Williams told us. "In that tradition, Brother Bear is an intimate story told on a grand scale."

to create this tale of a boy who suddenly transforms into a bear and befriends a young cub, Disney artists visited breathtaking locales in Alaska, Wyoming and California. All of which resulted in magnificent artwork and unforgettable characters.

You'll appreciate why Chuck calls Brother Bear a "handcrafted, painterly" film. "We wanted you to be able to see the artists' hands in the final work," he says. "We went for warmth and humor rather than high-tech and 'edge.'"

When you see the film, we hope you'll share a bit of out pride for this stunning north-country animated adventure produced right here in Florida.

At Mission: SPACE, the Crew is you

If you were part of a flight crew on a mission to Mars, what role would you play: Pilot, Navigator, Engineer or Commander? You never know which of these assignments you'll get next at the new Mission: SPACE attraction presented by HP, but you'll have a crucial part in the exhilarating journey.

According to our friends Bob Zalk and Susan Bryan, Senior Show Producers at Walt Disney Imagineering, no Disney thrill attraction has ever had this level of interactivity.

"You don't just sit and relax on Mission: SPACE," Bob chuckles. "you have specific things to do to make the mission a success."

Each spacecraft seats a crew of four. Before boarding, each member is "briefed" on his or her tasks. The tasks differ by crew member, but each handles roughly the same amount of responsibility.

Let's say you're appointed Navigator. Among your duties are to engage the lunar orbit and descent thrusters. As Susan explains, "You push the button, and then you actually feel the result of what you've just done."

Working together, your team approaches its destination. Prepare to be amazed. "What you see is based on actual Mars images from NASA probes Odyssey and Surveyor," says Susan. The result: uncanny realism.

After you experience Mission: SPACE at Epcot®, the question might be, which crew member would you like to be next? No problem. You're a Passholder. Maybe if you ride it often enough, you can be everybody!

It's Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is arriving in the Magic Kingdom® Park and this year promised to be the best ever. How can we be so sure? First of all, it's going on for 10 (count 'em 10) big nights. And second of all, backstage preparation is already underway.

While this annual event is billed at not-so-scary, the task of totally transforming the Magic Kingdom in a mere three hours each night of the party can be a little scary to Disney's team of decorators. To make it happen, they start their planning in late spring and continue right up to dress rehearsal. "It's like dressing the Park up for Halloween," says David Hartmann, the Art Director for the event. "We try to think what makes sense for the land and the characters and Mickey's Mouse-ka-rade costume parade. "That's my favorite part because every year we make it better and better."

Dressing up the park is just a part of the story. This year will also feature special Halloween fireworks, family photos, face painting and storytellers. Of course, you'll also enjoy unlimited use of the most popular Magic Kingdomattractions and trick-or-treating throughout the Park. David told us to keep a look out for the giant Mickey pumpkins. "There's candy in all of them."

This year's event takes place from 7:00 p.m. until midnight on
October 3, 5, 10, 14, 16, 19, 24, 26, 30 and 31. Regular advance tickets are $29.95 for ages 10 and up, and $24.95 for ages 3-9. Day-of ticket prices are $32.95 for ages 10 and up, and $27.95 for ages 3-9. Tax not included. For tickets, call (407) 560-PASS (7277).
