Aloha to all. I am still getting use to all the Echo stuff.

So what is the thing with the ears? Just a fun thing
for the posters?

Steve

Yoo Hoo, Steve!

I thought you'd never ask!
;)

This gives me an opportunity to finally present you with your ears:

As you might have seen, they also come in the Minnie Mouse style, for those who prefer that:

These latest version of Disney EchoEars come a long way from how they began, back when the Disney Echo started:

()_() ()~()
(_) (_)

Back then, before the internet became the popular medium it is today, the Disney Echo was distributed on Fidonet and that early computer network -- while world-wide in scope -- was text-only. You couldn't even do any special formatting of the text on it, so the early Ears you see above were about as high-tech as we could get back then.
;)

To get around the restriction of a text-based medium (which the Usenet newsgroups such as rec.arts.disney.parks and alt.disney.disneyland remain as to this day), folks started using emoticons to try and show pictures among all the text. Besides the little emoticons we're all used to seeing today, folks even created very large pictures based only on characters you can type into your keyboard, even bigger than the Fidonet dog shown here on the right.

Well, Chris Harrower started the Disney Discussions sub on WWIVNet, and founded the Disney Discussions conference -- also known as the Disney Echo -- on FidoNet around August 4, 1990. My wife Carol and I found the Disney Echo way back in April 1992 and instantly began to become active participants there - - so much so that when Chris tired of the duties of moderating the Echo he kindly named us as the new moderators. We were happy to do this and saw it as a way of giving something back to the Disney community that had given so much to us.

The ears came about as a welcoming "gift" whenever people would join the Disney Echo. There was no formal way of joining back then, as people simply logged on to their local BBS that had Fidonet and read the Disney Echo there. But when they would post their first message, that was the way of "joining" it and we'd respond with a warm welcome and the EchoEars emoticon welcome. Over the years, folks have used the text-based ones in ways such as adding them to their signature at the ends of their messages. Of course, now that the Disney Echo is internet-based, we offer a better-looking colorful version of the Disney EchoEars to all who post here.

And so, the tradition continues.
:D

This topic first appeared in the "Shake Hands" area but now also appears in the "How Do You Do (It)?" area for further discussion of the "ears"
:ears:

If you have any comments or questions about the "ears" we give out to new Disney EchoEars who post a message, this is the place to add your reply.
