Lunch/Dinner with a Disney Artist at the Disney-MGM Studio's The Brown Derby restaurant has been discontinued.  My contacts don't know if this is permanent or not.

Also, Lunch/Dinner with a Disney Imagineer while not discontinued has no bookings available after December 19th.

Now, this could be because of holiday schedules of personnel or The Brown Derby will be so busy, WDW Dining decided to stop doing these special meals over the holidays.

I was going to feature these meals on my site in December.  Oh, well, helpfully I'll be able to so sometime in 2004.  :lookaround:

Here's my speculation: It is permanent. And I bet it is because of the upcoming closing down of any animation production at the Disney-MGM Studios.

Disney is probably worried that if they let the current Disney artists there speak freely with the Guests at lunch then the closing of the studios would be a big part of the conversation.

Rich,

Just got back from WDW.  While visiting MGM on Friday, did the new Animation Tour.

The guide was asked a question about the next project the Florida studio would be doing.  The CM (not an animator) stumbled a bit on his answer before he figured out how to answer the question.  He said because of Brother Bear being moved up (it wasn't supposed to be out until 2004) and Lilo & Stitch, the animators are on "hiatus" after years without a break.

He went on to say the new project for Florida would be announced in January.  Of course, they may say February once January hits and so on until they have to tell us something. Let's hope otherwise.

BTW, the new beginning of the Animation Tour is excellent with a CM (I doubt he was an animator) interacting with a couple of screens.  The Mushu (sp?) character evolution is told very entertainingly.  At the end of the tour, you can try your hand at learning how to draw Mickey.  Which was fun.

The Studio work area you can still see but there is no one around working since the animators are on "hiatus".

Thanks, Scott. That confirms what I read in the Orlando Sentinel, that when Guests ask why the place is deserted they are told the animators are on "a break."
:uhoh:

As to the announcment in January, that is when Disney has said they'll announce the future of what will be happening at the Orlando studios... meaning that is when they'll comment on what the animators themselves have already been leaking out, that they're being laid off.
:unhappy:
