Rich--I noticed you are from New Orleans.  Are you also a long suffering Saints fan?   LOL

We used to live in Destrehan and I graduated from LSU.  I am a very fair weather Saints fan, I have to admit.  I have to root for the Texans now that I'm in Houston.  I like to give my friends in New Orleans a hard time about the Saints.  But they are the ones laughing this week.  Of course, with the Saints, you always have to wonder if it was just a mirage, or will they actually start to play like that going forward?  They have the talent, of course.  Just hope they can keep it together.

I wouldn't say I'm a long-suffering Saints fan -- I only came to New Orleans back in the mid-70s so that's not so long, is it? Anyway, I'm not always suffering -- sometimes with the way they play I'm numb.
:wwww:

They sure whomped the Falcons on Sunday though, didn't they?
:clapping:
But then, so has everyone else this season. LOL

I'm basically a fair-weather fan, too. I've only attended one of their games -- and that was when I got free tickets.

Speaking of New Orleans: Rich I keep meaning to ask you what the Mardis Gras is like. But I guess I'd better do that in another topic all its own
:blush2:

Ahhh.....Mardi Gras! :hmm:

It is a lot of fun.  We mostly went to the parades in Metairie which were fun but not as crazy as in New Orleans.  Although, once I was in college, we would go down to the New Orleans ones.  Woo Hoo!!!! LOL

Haven't been since I left Louisiana.  I'd like to visit again, though.

Most of the time I miss the big Carnival parades. I'm being very specific, because technically "Mardi Gras" is only the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and all else is "Carnival." The big ones generally they fall on weekends or close to Fat Tuesday and this usually occurs in a television ratings period, when they don't want us taking off at work (I work at a New Orleans TV station). Even if it wasn't a ratings period, Mardi Gras is such a big deal that they wouldn't want me to take off for it - - that and Jazz Fest are the biggest tourism periods for the city.

But I have been to most of the parades over the years and there are a lot of different types of "Mardi Gras" parades and activities to choose from: from the bawdyness of the French Quarter to milder family costume contests along Canal Street and in Metaire, the family-friendly parades through Mid-City, uptown New Orleans, and the surrounding suburbs like Metairie, the West Bank, St. Bernard, Slidell, Mandeville and Covington.

And there's even Mardi Gras parades celebrated in Mobile, Alabama (where Mardi Gras actually originated, by the way).

Cajun Mardi Gras in the river parishes west of New Orleans are a whole other flavor of fun, too. They have parades but one event I'm thinking of is when maskers ride on horseback through town collecting food items to make a community pot of gumbo for everybody to share. Some chicken chasing takes part, too, because they use fresh chicken!

Y'all come pass a good time down in N'awlins, sometime, cher.

The first time in my life I ever heard about Mardis Gras was on The Wonderful World Of Disney :mickey: I think I have it videotaped in fact, it was "The Von Drake Report" and has Von Drake hosting and Donald Duck reporting live from New Orleans while Jose Carioca reports live down in Rio. Is it really as colorful as they say it is? I want to see it someday, exactly what is it celebrating anyway? Maybe I'm the only one on the planet who doesn't know :blush2:

"Mardi Gras" is actually French for "Fat Tuesday".  It is the day before Ash Wednesday.  Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, which, for Catholics means you are making sacrifices by giving things up in the days leading up to Easter.  When I was a kid, I always gave up candy for Lent.   :)   So, the idea behind Mardi Gras, is that it is your last chance to "party down" before you have to be good on Ash Wednesday and the rest of Lent.

I am probably missing some details, but that is the jist of it.  Yes, it is very colorful and it can be alot of fun.  Depending on where you go, there are usually big crowds and LOTS of drinking.

I haven't been to the one in Rio, but I'm sure it is quite an experience as well.  Actually, I think I've heard it is even wilder than New Orleans' Mardi Gras.

Yes, "farewell to the flesh" in which you give up eating meat for Lent.

But when you think of the body parts on display in the French Quarter on Fat Tuesday, it takes on a whole new meaning.
