News posted on Laughing Place's Animation discussion boards, also quoting an Orlando Sentinel article dated 11/15/03 and recent postings on the Animation Nation.com WWW site discussion boards, that production at Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios in Orlando Florida has shut down on the animated film "My Peoples" which apparently has an alternate title of "A Few Good Ghosts".  Short story is that the movie wasn't coming together such that the whole movie was shut down and will not be moving forward.  Word is some of those working at WDFA/Florida are on severance or are about to be.  On the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park Animation Tour, the part of the tour where you used to be able to peer down on the working animators while they worked, that area is said to be a "ghost town" as of Monday 11/17/03.  The future of even having a Florida animation studio is said to be in doubt now.

That last assertion, if true, seems silly to me.  The Florida animation studio turned out some terrific movies in its day.  I can see changing times in the movie business, sure, but completely doing away with the studio seems rash to me.

Ignore the birthday cake part of the emoticon and it's usually celebratory nature.  Look at the candles instead.  As a Catholic, we tend to "light a candle" to represent a prayer intention being offered up.  If you are more secular than that, think of it instead as "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness."  Anyway, here are some positive thoughts this weekend going out to the folks at Disney Feature Animation in Florida and to Disney in general for better times, creative solutions being thought up and implemented and all around general support going out their way.  And if the cake represents some comfort food, then so be it.

I'm sorry for those working on it who will be out of work, but I'm very glad we won't have to see that movie: That was the one with James Carville providing a voice of a character in it, wasn't it? I can't stand him.

Here's the article:

Disney halts work on Orlando film

Quick quote:
Walt Disney Studios halted production Friday of its long-troubled animated project A Few Good Ghosts, raising questions about the fate of the company's Orlando animation facility and its staff of 258 artists.

Disney animation chief David Stainton confirmed Friday that the movie was being shut down and that "over the next six weeks we are going to examine all our options going forward," including shuttering the Florida studio.

"By January, we hope we'll have a more concrete plan for the [Orlando] studio," said Stainton, elaborating no further.

...Ghosts -- which is half computer generated, half traditionally drawn... the project, which went into production this summer, would have been the fourth feature that was produced exclusively at the Orlando studio, the others being Brother Bear, Lilo & Stitch and Mulan.

The entertainment giant recently laid off 50 animators in Orlando, closed its Paris animation studio and shuttered its animation unit in Tokyo, laying off more than 100 employees. In all, Disney has slashed more than 700 jobs in recent years, leaving the company with a total of about 900 animation workers, including those in Orlando.

In an effort to rein in escalating production and labor costs, Disney also has sliced animator salaries by as much as 30 percent to 50 percent.
[...]
Stainton, who was in Orlando on Friday morning to announce to the crew that production of A Few Good Ghosts was being shut down, sent an e-mail to the troops at Disney Studios in California explaining the decision. "The fundamental idea is not strong enough or universally appealing enough to support the kind of performance our movies must have today."
