Since opening in late October 2003 in the U.S. "Brother Bear" has earned in US domestic gross box office, estimated, $63,019,000.  The Friday-Saturday-Sunday of November 14-16, 2003 BB grossed $12,017,000 and ranked 4th at the box office.  By comparison "Looney Toons Back in Action" which just opened November 14 only grossed $9,500,000 and ranked a disappointing 5th in the box office for this weekend.  BB is G-rated, "Looney Toons" is PG-rated.  The above weekend figures are estimates I got from Box Office Mojo with final figures due Monday afternoon November 17.

"Brother Bear", according to estimates on Sunday November 23, 2003 on Box Office Mojo, has earned an estimated $70,441,000 in US domestic gross box office since opening near the end of October and going into wide release Saturday November 1.  However it's ranking at the box office is slipping.  Last weekend it was #4, this weekend #7.  It may have gotten bad reviews (see Rotten Tomatoes WWW site) but Disney fans who've seen it like it and can't understand why there are such harshly bad reviews.  If "Cat in the Hat" or "Looney Tues: Back in Action" or "Haunted Mansion" are not to your liking, and you want to take the kids to the movies, and you haven't seen "Brother Bear" yet, now's the time to go.  It's a nice movie for family and Thanksgiving time, very feel-good, lovely scenery and good word of mouth from Disney fans, uplifting.  The busy year end box office season will crowd out "Brother Bear" in a few weeks.  And maybe your seeing "Brother Bear" will "send a message" to Disney that you do support 2-D animation, the Florida Feature Animation studio, and G-rated Disney movies vs. PG-rated Disney movies.

Reuters News Service story how movies did in US Box Office Thanksgiving weekend, 2003 (November 28, 29 and 30, Friday, Saturday and Sunday).  Notice how "Brother Bear" is still hangin' in there at #10 this weekend amid lots of competition.  BB is the alternative to the rough-edged "Looney Tunes" and "Cat in the Hat".  Begin quoting:

Five Day Thanksgiving long weekend US domestic box office results from Box Office Mojo, ESTIMATED, with final numbers due Monday afternoon.  Still in the Top 10, at #10 but dropping, is Brother Bear.  Last week BB was #7.  Over the 5-day period BB made $6,421,000 increasing since the week before, likely due to schools being out and families going out to the movies as well as shopping.  So far since opening in two cities in late October and going to wide release November 1 BB has grossed an estimated $77,700,000.  Not bad!
