The Lion King: A Giant Leap

The Birth of "The Lion King"

A new book tells us what went into creating the screen classic.

A Lion's Tale

Making an animated film "is a leap of faith," notes Don Hahn in his introduction to "The Lion King: A Giant Leap" (Disney Editions, $15.95 / $11.17 from Amazon.com). And a lot of faith went into "The Lion King"; the film had been in development for several years before Hahn and several film directors struck on the final form the story would take: "A love story between father and son."

In this homage to the classic movie, producer Hahn recounts the many twists and turns in the film's evolution, including the unusual auditions of Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella and the animators' trips to the L.A. Zoo to study "the finer points of warthog locomotion."

The book features more than 100 pages of storyboard sketches, workbook drawings, background paintings, and production stills, along with a retelling of the tale by Christopher Finch, author of "The Art of Walt Disney" and "Winnie the Pooh: A Celebration of the Silly Old Bear."
