I was wondering why folks choose FtW.  Personally we chose it for 2 reasons.  First and foremost was the price.  When we went in May we used a discount code to stay 6 nights in a full hookup campsite for about $260 including tax.  Imagine a WDW resort with all the perks that go with it for what it costs for 1 night at a deluxe resort!  It was even cheaper than some camping "resorts" (like Yogi Bear) here in NY.

Second is that we are die hard campers.  We go camping just about every weekend in spring, summer and fall.  We even spend our vacations camping.  Having the best campground in the universe as a WDW resort is like being in heaven.

Why did you choose FtW?

Because Disney doesn't let us camp out in the castle.

Actually, I've always wanted to have a vacation at Fort Wilderness ever since I saw that there were RV's you could stay in. Then they introduced Wilderness Homes and they looked cool, so I wanted to try those. Then the WHs were replaced by Wilderness Cabins and they looked even cooler. Then we got our Annual Passes and when we heard of a great AP discount on a Wilderness Cabin we jumped on it and thoroughly enjoyed our 8 night stay there this year. We'd go back and stay in a cabin again, anytime!

If we owned our own RV, the first place I'd like to take it would be to Fort Wilderness.

Mainly because we like to camp and like to stay on Disney property.  Actually, we had been to WDW a few times before I even knew FW existed.  After this discovery, I made reservations at FW and never stayed anywhere else when we are at WDW.  Next year we will break tradition, however.  An extra trip in February for a belated wedding anniversary gift to my wife, but we will be at WL and you can bet we will be going over to FW for a visit and dinner at Trail's End!

rocklandrvers,

We're chose FW for the same reasons - cost and our love of camping.  When we first started camping at Fort Wilderness, back in the mid 90's, our kids were still young...6 and 8 years old.  Camping is a very family-friendly activity.  Our kids were always able to find friends their age to play with in the campground.  We fell in love with the whole Disney experience, so much so that we were going 4 or 5 times a year!  There's no way we could have afforded that many trips without staying at Fort Wilderness.  We have since stayed at other Disney resorts (All Stars & Animal Kingdom Lodge) but I still would prefer camping at Fort Wilderness.

I agree that camping is very much a family activity.  It really has brought us closer together.  I nearly forgot the third reason we chose to camp instead of stay in a hotel.  Camping also lets us include another member of the family who for the first 6 or so years of his life missed out on our vacations.  He is our dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Shamrock.

We used to feel guilty every year when we would have to put him in the kennel for 2 weeks when we went off on our motel based vacations.  Even though the kennel we use is fantastic, we could see he didn't adjust well and would not eat and was always hoarse from barking and crying the entire time.

Fast forward to our RV purchase in May 2002 and that all changed.  He comes along on each weekend and every vacation.  He too got to go to WDW in May 2003 and stay at FtW, even though his piece of the world was limited to the pet loops.

Maybe it was our imagination, but there was something magical for him too.  Every time we came back he was like a puppy again as he chased those strange lizards (not too many lizards where we live in NY) and other weird wildlife. And OHHHH the smells!  He sniffed around those fresh smells like never before.  He was truly in his glory as he pulled us around the campgrounds with his nose never leaving the ground.  LOL

Ditto the thoughts on taking the pooch along.  Our beagle has gone every trip to FW with us.  We kennel him during the day at the FW kennels, but they are the greatest and the staff is fantastic.  He loves being with his family every night, and we like having him along, too.

Its just fun and magical,  and very relaxing for us,  we visit and don't go to the theme parks - we have tons of fun right in Fort Wilderness

We stayed there last year because we had just bought a pop-up camper the year before and decided to check it out to save money.  But after staying there, we just loved it.  I imagine at sometime we will stay at one of the other resorts again, but FW is soooo unbelievably nice, I am in no rush to.  That campground is definitely the BEST campground by far we have ever camped in.  And, yes, I love the peacocks walking around.  How unique!!!  Trails End Buffet is excellent as well.  Well I could go on forever, but I think we all get the point.

The first and foremost reason was the cost. We are a family of five and to stay at another resort would have to be into a mid price resort. This would cost us about three times as much money as the campground. Now we have already decided to upgrade to a travel trailer as it is very time consuming to set up and take down our pop up camper. After traveling 22 hours to get to the campground the last thing we wanted to do was spend another 3hrs setting up camp.

We have traveled to WDW at least once a year since 93. We discovered FW sometime around 94 or 95 and spent time there during every trip. We usually stayed at one of the moderates and decided to buy into DVC in 99, All the while spending several evenings at FW just because it was such a fun place. Then came the summer trip in 2001 when we rented the Wilderness home because of a huge postcard discount. After that, the talk of a travel trailer started so we could camp at FW. We bought the trailer a year ago and have been to FW once in august and are heading back in December.
If you see Sundee at the campfire.. tell her Disneydaddy says "hey howdy hey"

As Rv owners. it's hard to justify staying anywhere other than Ft Wilderness.  On some Girl's Only trips, I've stayed at GF and AKL.  The whole time I wished I was at FW.  Don't get me wrong, the AKL and GF were nice, I just love my RV and the whole FW experience.
