I'm looking forward to seeing more reports about reactions to Mickey's PhilharMagic

Gloria was there yesterday for the first day of the Annual Passholder previews and posts this trip report.

Read it, take a look at the pictures, then come back here to discuss it. Beware, it contains many spoilers, so don't read it (just look at the pictures, they don't give too much away) if you want to still be surprised by what goes on when you get there to see it.

I have an immediate thought I'd like to share with you... but look at the report first.

Those theater seats that have posts on the seat backs carved like fiddle heads... I sure hope Guests don't damage those things. The four "strings" on the sides of the posts look like they are bendable and perhaps have already been bent a bit.

Please folks, promise to help this new attraction stay in great shape for many years to come by doing your part in being a good Guest when you're there, okay? Just like EchoEars started a Polynesian Concierge Pledge here on the Disney Echo, I'm willing to take this pledge:

I promise to keep my busy fingers off the many details and features found in Mickey's PhilharMagic and do my part in helping to keep it looking good!

Imagineering Mickey's PhilharMagic

In Mickey's PhilharMagic, Mickey and Donald both play integral roles. As Imagineers explain the storyline to Disney's most beloved characters, one is happy with his part and one (can you guess?) is not so pleased. Mickey's PhilharMagic, a new 3-D spectacular debuts in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in October 2003. The attraction features classic Disney characters in computer-generated 3-D imagery.

Beloved Characters Come To Life

Mickey's PhilharMagic, which immerses guests in classic Disney music and films such as "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin," "Peter Pan," "The Little Mermaid" and "The Lion King," unfolds on the largest seamless screen ever created for a three-dimensional film -- a 150-foot-wide canvas -- and showcases a fourth dimension of dazzling in-theater effects.

Donald and the Beast?

In Mickey's PhilharMagic, Donald finds himself chasing Mickey's Sorcerer hat through scenes from classic Disney films, including the "Be Our Guest" scene from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast."

Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Today's the official opening day of Mickey's PhilharMagic in WDW's Magic Kingdom!

I've seen this attraction 3 times now and it is fabulous! Here's the latest picture and press release about it, direct from Disney:

Sym-funny of Characters

Mickey's PhilharMagic, a new 3-D spectacular which debuts in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in October 2003, features classic Disney characters in computer-generated 3-D imagery. While Donald mischievously tries to capture Mickey's Sorcerer's hat and take control of the PhilharMagic orchestra, guests are immersed in music and scenes from classic Disney films such as "Beauty and The Beast," "Aladdin," "Peter Pan," "The Little Mermaid" and "The Lion King." Walt Disney World Resort is in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Walt Disney World Resort Presents Symphony Of Classic Disney Songs in Mickey's PhilharMagic

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- From the beginning of Walt Disney's storied career in animation, music has played a leading role in Disney cartoon shorts and feature films. From the breakthrough of Mickey Mouse tapping out "Turkey in the Straw" in 1928's "Steamboat Willie" -- the first cartoon to use synchronized sound -- to the ambitious visual interpretation of classical music in 1940's "Fantasia," Walt Disney recognized the power of music to propel his stories and articulate the thoughts and wishes of his vivid animated characters.

That grand tradition is brought gloriously to life in Mickey's PhilharMagic, a fun new Magic Kingdom attraction at Walt Disney World Resort that celebrates some of Disney's most memorable music and movies in a beautifully luxurious setting -- a grand concert hall located in the shadow of Cinderella Castle. During the 3-D Fantasyland attraction, Donald Duck misuses Mickey's magical sorcerer's hat while preparing for a concert performance and is sent on a madcap journey through scenes from several classic animated features, with song highlights including:
  • Mickey Mouse Club March
(from television's "Mickey Mouse Club," 1955-59)
Music and lyrics by Jimmie Dodd
© Walt Disney Music Company (ASCAP)

This irresistibly memorable tune announced the start of one of the most popular children's television series of all time, "The Mickey Mouse Club," which debuted Oct. 3, 1955, on ABC. Its bouncy rhythm taught millions of baby boomers and subsequent generations how to spell "Mickey Mouse" and humorously established Donald Duck's jealousy over Mickey's popularity.

  • Be Our Guest

(from 1991's "Beauty and the Beast")
Lyrics by Howard Ashman; music by Alan Menken
© Walt Disney Music Company (ASCAP) / Wonderland Music Company, Inc. (BMI)

From the first animated feature film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, this Broadway-style number features Jerry Orbach's show-stopping performance as Lumiere, the debonair candlestick who describes in sumptuous detail a "culinary cabaret" of gastronomic delights:

Be our guest! Be our guest!
Put our service to the test
Tie a napkin 'round your neck, cherie
    And we'll provide the rest

    Soup du jour!
    Hot hors d'oeuvres!
Why, we only live to serve
Try the grey stuff, it's delicious
Don't believe me? Ask the dishes!
  • The Sorcerer's Apprentice (from 1940's "Fantasia")
    Composed by Paul Dukas

Inspired by German poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe's Der Zauberlehrling, Dukas' 1897 composition was brilliantly interpreted in Walt Disney's animated masterpiece "Fantasia" as Mickey Mouse learns the disastrous consequences of borrowing his master's magical hat to bring to life a single broomstick to assist with his chores.
  • Part of Your World (from 1989's "The Little Mermaid")
Lyrics by Howard Ashman; music by Alan Menken
© Walt Disney Music Company (ASCAP) / Wonderland Music Company, Inc. (BMI)

Jodi Benson's performance gives voice to Ariel's longing to live "up where they stay all day in the sun," away from the undersea mermaid realm of her stern father, King Triton, in this emotional ballad:

I've got gadgets and gizmos aplenty
I've got whozits and whatzits galore
    You want thingamabobs?
    I've got twenty
    But who cares?
    No big deal
    I want more

I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see 'em dancin'
    Walkin' around on those--
    Whaddya call 'em? Oh,
    feet
  • I Just Can't Wait to be King (from 1994's "The Lion King")
Lyrics by Tim Rice; music by Elton John
© Wonderland Music Company, Inc. (BMI)

In this buoyant song, young lion cub Simba (voiced by Jason Weaver) gleefully extols the perks he'll inherit someday when he's "standing in the spotlight" as king -- despite the flustered admonitions of hornbill Zazu (Rowan Atkinson), King Mufasa's confidant:I'm gonna be the mane event
    Like no king was before
I'm brushing up on looking down
    I'm working on my roar
Thus far, a rather uninspiring thing
Oh, I just can't wait to be king!
  • You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly! (from 1953's "Peter Pan")
Music and lyrics by Sammy Cahn and Sammy Fain
© Wonderland Music Company, Inc. (BMI)

The perfect accompaniment as Peter Pan and Tinker Bell fly out of London to Never Land, this memorable song describes the exuberance of sailing among the clouds thanks to faith and trust and a little bit of pixie dust:

When there's a smile in your heart
There's no better time to start
Think of all the joy you'll find
When you leave the world behind
    And bid your cares good-bye
You can fly! You can fly! You can fly!
  • A Whole New World (from 1992's "Aladdin")
Lyrics by Tim Rice; music by Alan Menken
© Walt Disney Music Company (ASCAP) / Wonderland Music Company, Inc. (BMI)

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Song, this soaring duet features the vocals of Aladdin (Brad Kane) and Princess Jasmine (Lea Salonga) as they explore the "unbelievable sights" and "indescribable feeling" of sailing through the clouds aboard a magic carpet:

    A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
    Or where to go
    Or say we're only dreaming

    A whole new world
         A whole new world
    That's where we'll be
         That's where we'll be
    A thrilling chase
         A wondrous place
    For you and me

"Music has always had a prominent part in all our products, from the early cartoon days," Walt Disney once observed. "So much so, in fact, that I cannot think of the pictorial story without thinking about the complementary music which will fulfill it.

"Credit for the memorable songs and scores must, of course, go to the brilliant composers and musicians who have been associated with me through the years."

Yes, and actually it had its official opening yesterday.

Jeany, when posting messages here please make sure that there isn't already messages with the topic you want to post about. Tonight you created three new topics when there were already messages about those topics, so I merged all of them into the existing threads.

"Mickey's PhilharMagic," New Fireworks Debut at Walt Disney World Resort

October 9, 2003: A groundbreaking new attraction and dazzling new fireworks debuted Wednesday in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.
The previews were part of a gala week of grand openings and announcements at the Vacation Kingdom that drew media, celebrities and company executives. Astronauts joined in the festivities, which included the dedication of Mission: SPACE, a new Epcot attraction that offers guests the experience of space flight to Mars.

And anchoring it all: a whole new Disney vacation called Magical Gatherings, treating larger groups to special trip planning and activities options. In addition, to celebrate the launch of Magical Gatherings comes a new offer from Visa, a “Kids Stay and Play Free” promotion.

Wednesday night’s exciting openings included:
  • “Mickey's PhilharMagic,” a new 3-D film spectacular presented by Kodak, stars Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other favorite Disney characters -- the first attraction ever to feature classic Disney characters in computer-generated animation. Set in Fantasyland Concert Hall, the musical experience unfolds on the largest seamless screen ever created for a three-dimensional film, a 150-foot-wide canvas.
  • “Wishes,” a new fireworks show in Magic Kingdom created especially for the Magical Gatherings inaugural year, was the evening’s finale. Narrated by Jiminy Cricket, the show is several times the size of “Fantasy in the Sky,” the park’s previous show which debuted in 1975. The story of “Wishes” blends classic Disney songs and character voices with pyrotechnic effects never before seen in a Disney theme park.
  • Later today at Epcot, astronauts Wally Schirra, Jim Lovell, Buzz Aldrin, Bruce McCandless, Mae Jameson and Guion Bluford Jr. are scheduled to join Michael Eisner, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, and Carly Fiorina, chairman and CEO of HP, for the grand opening of Mission: SPACE presented by HP. The new attraction launches guests into an out-of-this-world adventure using a custom-designed ride system based on actual NASA astronaut training techniques.

Imagineer Kevin Rafferty talks about Mickey's PhilharMagic

Quick quote:
Those aren't "rides" at Disneyland and Disney World. They're life-sized movies where visitors can be immersed in the action.

"Every attraction begins with an establishing shot, then cuts to a medium shot, then a close-up," says Kevin Rafferty, a senior concept writer/director. "We're telling a story, but in a different setting."

Walking around the various parks at Walt Disney World, Rafferty points out how a distant view can make something like the Haunted Mansion intriguing. As guests get closer, more of the story comes into view. When they're right at the door, details -- like doorknobs and cob-webbed chandeliers -- make the picture crystal clear. "It's all part of the magic," Rafferty says.

As a 25-year veteran of the theme park business, the native Californian has been involved in everything from naming food ("Academy Award wieners," for example) to writing scripts for full-blown shows. His latest achievement -- "Mickey's PhilharMagic" -- is a 3-D movie that features Mickey Mouse and friends in a tour through some of Disney's greatest musical hits. While cartoon characters sing about pie and perfume, scents waft over the audience. Water squirts them at another time and, thanks to 3-D effects, characters like Aladdin look like they're suspended over the audience.

Rafferty, however, believes the "PhilharMagic" story begins before audience members enter the theater and put on 3-D glasses. As a result, theater posters in the lobby tout other "films," heavy curtains suggest this is the Magic Kingdom's opera house. Goofy can be heard running through the building, trying to get things ready. Donald Duck, meanwhile, is everywhere, looking for trouble and finding it once he dons the Sorcerer's Apprentice hat.

"Again, it's story-telling," Rafferty says.

[...]

"I'm kind of the official 'name' guy," he says with a smile. "Whenever something new happens, they ask me to come up with a title." Rafferty makes a long list of possibilities, then submits it to his superiors. Sometimes, the decision rests with Michael Eisner, the company's head, who loves to spend time with the imagineers.

Blizzard Beach -- a Florida water park that features snowy settings -- was an easy assignment. "When you think of a snowstorm in tropical Florida, it comes right away," Rafferty says. "It named itself."

"PhilharMagic" was pretty simple, too. "It's a very Disney-sounding word. We knew we were going to have Maestro Mickey Mouse, so we just invented a word to go with that. We do that a lot."

Full details.
