Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Here's a trip report that Carol my wife posted to rec.arts.disney.misc way back on November 25, 1996 that I  think you'll enjoy reading:

Visiting WDW Alone
By Carol Koster

My husband had a convention to attend at WDW one year and I went with him. I couldn't attend all of the convention with him, so while he did seminars I did WDW alone. I had a great time (this was in summer, not at Christmas BTW). I was well versed and conversed from the park-related r.a.d. traffic and I knew what to see and where to go. I had complete freedom of movement. I felt like all the people from the newsgroup was with me in spirit. Also you will be in a crowd of like-minded Disney fans, so you will not be totally alone. Strike up a conversation with people in line. People watch. The entertainment is still entertaining by yourself.

There are three really good comprehensive WWW sites about WDW:

www.disneyworld.com Disney's own site)

Debbie's Disney Digest [Note: This is now AllEarsNet ](...operated by a WDW fan, Debbie Wills, as a labor of love for other Disney theme park fans and is in the process of turning into a site of Frequently Asked Questions texts about WDW. There is information there about the resorts, parks, some restaurant menus and more.)

The Ultimate Disney Links Page [Note: This used to be at www.tudlp.com run by our friend Ed Sterrett, but he decided to stop doing it. When I just tried that address, I was rerouted to DisneySearch.net, which is not the same as what Carol was writing about. ] (Operated by Ed Sterrett who works for WDW Security and who takes genuine personal pleasure in helping guests to WDW get the most out of their stay and visit. It has a lot of information about the parks and Orlando and local weather information. I don't know the URL either.)

For the unknown URLs use Alta Vista search engine with those keywords.

For guide books, try Birnbaum's Official Guide to WDW, Bob Sehlinger's Unofficial Guide to WDW or WDW for Adults.

You will have to make priority seating reservations even if you are by yourself. You will be going at the most crowded time of year (between Christmas and New Year.)  Call 1-407-WDW-DINE to do that.

Hope this helps! Have a good time!

Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Here's what Carol posted on rec.arts.disney ( before ".parks" was added to it! ) on October 24, 1994:

WDW Alone
By Carol Koster

I've visited WDW by myself. The occasion was when my husband was attending a professional convention. We had been active on computer nets for several months, and I was fairly well versed on WDW by then. I had a blast! I never felt I was alone! I had hundreds of people whose posts I'd read in my mind. They were there before me, and I was retracing their steps, seeing through their eyes, and I knew I'd be posting information for them to read and enjoy about my trip. Also, when you think about it, there are cast members and other visitors there too. You are there with many like-minded people of your own age. ;)

What you need are some local kindred spirits!
  • 1) Consider going to the next DL r.a.d.-meet! You will have a marvelous time! The date is Sunday, December 4th [NOTE: This was in 1994!], and they tend to gather at the Goofy statue near the Partners statue in the Central Hub (does that make sense?) at High Noon! They go out to eat together, ride rides together, yak yak yak Disney together, they watch parades and Fantasmic! together and pretty much spend at least the afternoon together if not into the night together. Don't worry that you haven't met any of them before. These are a very friendly and decent group of people, r.a.d. luminaries and r.a.d. lurkers, bringing Significant Others and family with them, all ages. You will have r.a.d. and Disney in common! You will have plenty to talk about! We have attended two similar "flesh-meets" at WDW, and I promise you, Jeanine, you will have a wonderful time!
  • 2) Consider joining one of the chapters of the National Fantasy Fan Club for Disneyana Collectors and Enthusiasts (NFFC). This is a national club for anyone who likes Disney and collects just about anything Disney. Contact them at www.nffc.org. Annual dues are $20 for individuals or families. They throw a terrific annual convention in Anaheim every July and a mini-con in January, and you get an excellent newsy monthly newsletter. Your membership in the national organization allows you to be a member of any of the NFFC's various local chapters. There's lots of local chapters in Southern California, the best known probably the Chapter at the Park in Anaheim. The NFFC can provide you with a list of local chapters to look into joining, or they can provide you with information on how to form a chapter of your own!  You will meet lots of Disney fans who are just like you: They love Disney and are not afraid to tell the world about it, and are happy to meet other Disney fans. They visit DL frequently. There is an NFFC chapter in Australia and an electronic chapter on Prodigy and Delphi online computer services, which hold meetings live online.
  • 3) There's always rec.arts.disney!  Lots of people who post here have been to Disneyland, or work there. You can relive your fond memories, or air your gripes, with people all over the world who share your affection for Disney and know exactly what you are talking about. And we are always here, whenever you want to flip your computer and modem on. :)

Hope this helps!

The RADP8 meet is at WDW in December.  And we meet all over the place.  It is a great way to meet others who are Disneyholics too.

I went alone last December to RADP7 and met so many friends. I hope to bring my DH this year, but if he can't come, I'll be there solo.

Tina, looks like maybe we might get to meet if you're going to RADP8 in December!  My DH and I will be there for the land portion of MouseFest and participating in many of the events. We're going to be there from Dec. 5-13.  How about you?

Is anyone else going to be there at that time?  Maybe we could get a mini-meet of our own going.

Yoo Hoo, Rose!

You certainly could represent the Disney Echo at RADP8!

Isn't there someplace you could add that to the list of online get-togethers on r.a.d.p.?

Gee, Rich, I was hoping you'd be able to join us. If not, I'd be happy to add a set of DisneyEchoEars to the other hats I'll be wearing during the December meets. :ears:

I'd really like to get a meet going for DisneyEcho members, so we can add it to the list of groups attending.  I'll start a new post to see if we can determine who's going to be at WDW and maybe to discuss some ideas for meeting.  Sound ok?

Yoo Hoo, Rose!

That sounds like a great plan! No, I'm afraid I won't be able to make it - - we like to take vacations when my son is out of school and his school's in session when these December meets always take place. And I don't feel right taking off on vacation without my wife and son.

Years ago we actually had a "Disney EchoEars Day" at WDW that was attended by many folks who used the Disney Echo back when it was on FidoNet. I'd love it if you'd represent us with a meet for any Disney EchoEars going, and by all means call it "Disney EchoEars Day" whenever you have that meet, just like it was before. I promise to be there in spirit!
:)

Since so many Disney EchoEars love the Polynesian, here's a suggestion: a get-together breakfast at the Polynesian Resort, just like we did for the first Disney EchoEars Day! You can't have it at the Tahitian Terrace like we did, but I think a big table (or two) at the Kona Cafe would be a great substitute. Anyone who desires could also have Tonga Toast, which was a big hit at our first Disney EchoEars Day.
