I just read this on Laughing Place's Animation discussion forum.  The Wave 3 of the Disney Treasures DVD/VHS collection of vintage Disney cartoons and live action...the ones that come in the metal tins...has been delayed.  They were going to be released December 2, 2003.  New date will be May 2004.  Reasons include production issues:  Demand from pre-orders exceeding the number Disney wanted to have made, demand for "Finding Nemo" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" titles overwhelming.  Someone who knows his stuff on Laughing Place is looking into the matter now.  News came on Monday, November 10.  The delayed titles include Tomorrowland, the World War II cartoons and work Disney did for the Defense Department, color Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

Yes, it is true. All details about the Disney Treasures Wave 3 DVDs has been temporarily removed from the Buena Vista Home Entertainment publicity site, except for this banner and a link to the public website (here's the link to Disney's information about the wartime Disney material).

The official public BVHE website only lists Spring 2004 as the new release date of Wave 3. There is still a link to order each one online there, but when you click on it to order you get this message: "We're sorry. This item is currently unavailable."

Amazon.com hasn't reacted to the news yet, because their website still lists these as coming out on December 2, 2003.

I predict there will be a lot more Pirates of the Caribbean DVDs given out as Christmas gifts to make up for the delay in these DVDs coming out on time!

Carol says "Yeah, just put a pair of mouse ears or duck bill on the DVD and the gift recipient will never notice the difference... until they start viewing the video."  :eyebrow:

So, you don't think they'll be "savvy" huh?  :depp:

Well, Amazon.com has now changed their listings for each of the Disney Treasures Wave 3 DVDs to show the new release date of May 4, 2004... but now the price on each one of them has gone up from their previously-listed price of $23 to the new price of $28.04!

Carol found information that anyone who wants to complain about the delay of these DVDs can email Disney
at disneyinfo@disneyhelp.com and that word about this email address came from a Disney Store CM.

OK, I've read through UltimateDisney.com (Disney home video fan site) and their discussion board Subject: about the delay of Wave 3.  They link to other animation and home video WWW sites.  Some have sources to Leonard Maltin (film writer and critic) and Jeff Beck (an animation historian) who both confirm the delayed release.  The causes as discussed at Ultimate Disney and the links they post to other home video and animation forums are the heavy demand on DVD manufacturing facilities to keep up with consumer demand on pre-orders, the huge sales/pre-sales so far for such titles as Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Caribbean, Freaky Friday, The Lion King, and that on eBay the "going rate" prices for some of these titles in the Wave 3 are running very high meaning pent up demand for too little product.  In other words, Disney may have seriously underestimated how many VHSs/DVDs to have made of all these titles and the factory(ies) Disney uses can't keep up.  When you cruise around to other Disney/animation/home video WWW sites with discussion boards there is unanimously the wailing and gnashing of teeth, particularly among those who pre-ordered at least one if not more for themselves and for gift-giving for the Holidays.  Disney is having a banner year in movies and home video releases and the demand is huge for product.

The run for each title will be increased.  However with the way people generally are talking on these boards, you may have to decide for yourself soon whether to also pre-order to ensure you get your Wave 3 titles rather than relying on walking into your favorite video retailer and "assuming" the Wave 3 titles you want will be on the shelf.  I would recommend cruising around the various Disney sites such as Laughing Place (animation discussion forum), Mouse Planet (entertainment discussion forum), Ultimate Disney's discussion forum, wade through the wailing and gnashing of teeth posts, click on any factual links that are posted and make any decisions about waiting or pre-ordering that you feel you have to make.

On Ultimate Disney they are saying the new shipping date of Wave 3 videos is May 10, 2004 on Amazon.com.  If you pre-ordered you might want to contact who you pre-ordered from to clarify the situation for yourself.  If you pre-ordered you may have done yourself some favors in that you locked in a certain price ahead of future price increases due to actual or perceived shortages or difficult availability of titles, and that you are more assured of actually getting a copy if demand in May 2004 exceeds demand today.

Let the buyer be aware duly diligent and do his or her own research on this matter.

Well, when you click here and then check each DVD you'll see that Amazon is now saying that they will be released on May 4th.

People probably saw what they saw on Amazon.com regarding shipping dates in May 2004 and posted what they saw/heard.  Whatever.  Bottom line is:  After surfing to various WWW sites the news of this delay came out on November 7th and started being confirmed on November 10th.  News spread but maybe due to the sudden and not-too-public way this went out to the public various home video pre-sellers didn't get the word to change their sites or inform their customes until at least Saturday or Monday.  People are still learning about this news for the first time on various Internet video/Disney sites.  Folks aren't too happy.  But if it means more supply for these particular titles so be it, I guess, but it just seems that Disney or the retailers could have informed their consumers in a more humane way.

Yeah, and it's a thought I came up with after I noticed "Home on the Range" wasn't going to premiere 'til April and that's the same month "The Alamo" got delayed to.  It's almost as if all this were being planned!    On one of the above mentioned Internet discussion boards the point was brought out that "Hildalgo" was also postponed from October 2003 to Spring 2004 for movie theatres, "Hidalgo" being one of Disney motion picture divisions' work.  Disney's fiscal year starts October 1, which makes April 1 their fiscal 3rd Quarter.  Disney might be planning to bunch together as much money-making stuff as they can muster due to expected stiff competition that same quarter.

Someone on Laughing Place posted that May 18 is the new Wave 3 release date.  I went to Ultimate Disney and there are no postings confirming that date.  I went to Mouse Planet and there are no postings confirming that date.  Mighty frustrating!  Disney's own official site about Wave 3 still says December 2, 2003.  Some are still posting their favorite home video/DVD purchase sites are still listing December 2.   When you search for "fine print" on Disney's own site and maybe some others they are mixed in the dates they say between December 2-Spring 2004-May 2004.  So, like, who knows for sure?  Like, mighty frustrating!
