THE WAITING IS OVER!!!!
These are unadjusted-for-inflation all time box office domestic grosses as charted on Box Office Mojo, updated as of close of business on Wednesday, August 20, 2003.
Please notice that only $24,263 separates "Finding Nemo" from tieing "The Lion King" as #9 and then moving on to exceed TLK's totals to become the highest domestic grossing box office animated film of all time, as of a chart below compiled through end of business on Wednesday. Since the figures below are for Wednesday, that means _today_(Thursday, August 21) people attending theatres are likely taking "Nemo" to that box office milestone. "Nemo" on weekdays is still pulling in, domestically, $247,000-$252,000 _per day_. So add $247,000-$252,000/day to "Nemo"'s year-to-date total of $328,517,513 and "Nemo" will top TLK today, Thursday, August 21, 2003, definitely.
That means for Friday morning Disney-Pixar's "Finding Nemo" will make morning entertainment headlines. The entertainment press will check box office tally sites such as Box Office Mojo which don't get updated 'til the morning after the night before, if you follow. As soon as these sites get updated the news will be out, on Friday. But the milestone was achieved today.
Again, when you consult the chart on Box Office Mojo titled "Adjusted for Inflation" the two films still aren't close. But the chart below, on movie tracking WWW sites such as Box Office Mojo (www.boxofficemojo.com), is what the entertainment press is following.
Begin quoting figures copied from Box Office Mojo (I placed spaces on purpose between #8 and #9-#10):
Rank Title (click to view) Studio Lifetime Gross Year
1 Titanic Par. $600,788,188 1997
2 Star Wars Fox $460,998,007 1977
3 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Uni. $435,110,554 1982
4 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace Fox $431,088,297 1999
5 Spider-Man Sony $403,706,375 2002
6 Jurassic Park Uni. $357,067,947 1993
7 Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers NL $339,776,642 2002
8 Forrest Gump Par. $329,694,499 1994
9 The Lion King Dis. $328,541,776 1994
10 Finding Nemo Dis. $328,517,513 2003
End of quoted figures from Box Office Mojo. Quoted Box Office Mojo WWW site figures as of Wednesday, August 20, 2003.
Difference of $24,263 as of Wednesday, August 20, 2003 between "Finding Nemo" and "The Lion King", and difference of $1,176,986 separating "Finding Nemo" from #8 "Forrest Gump" on the above list. After "The Lion King" then "Forrest Gump" is next and that's probably as far as "Nemo" will get. Locally to us few multiplex theatres are still carrying "Finding Nemo" and it's even playing in the dollar cheapie theatre local to us.
Updated figures that would include through end of business on Thursday, August 21, 2003 will be released on Box Office Mojo the morning of Friday, August 22, 2003
These are figures when the movies actually played in theatres. Home video is another, different, separate set of figures and milestones.
By sheer coincidence today before Rich went to work we had catfish for dinner. "Finding Nemo"...fish movie...catfish...coincidence....heh.
