Now, if anyone is tempted to steal it again, well, reminds me of what they say in the Pirates attraction (paraphrasing): You've seen the cursed treasure. Now ye knows too much. Warned, ye be! CarolKoster Disney EchoEar Grand Mouseter Group: Members Posts: 5358 Joined: Aug. 2001 Posted: Aug. 22, 2003 10:00 am/pm WebTink, The only thing about PotC:CotBP that was familiar or even remotely appealing to me was the fact it was based on a famous and beloved Disney theme park attraction.  Given that "Country Bears" a year ago wasn't well-received and was also based on a Disney theme park attraction, and the made-for-TV-movie "Tower of Terror" was just-OK, I originally had low expectations about "Pirates".  I am the sort of person who enjoys reading or hearing movie reviews in advance of a movie release I might be interested in.  Reading around on other Disney fan WWW site discussion areas I began to hear "good buzz" about this movie.  Read the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes and still more good buzz, not totally stellar buzz, but good buzz.  I went, I saw, I loved it!  I don't know anything about the actors' past films, their personalities off-screen, who the heck Jerry Bruckheimer (sp?) is supposed to be, nuthin'.  All I knew was good word of mouth and this movie was based on a Disney theme park attraction. This movie is like reading a really well-written adolescent novel about pirates.  You read, page after page, can't put it down.  Starts a little slowly, as novels do sometimes, but then you get caught up in it.  Chores have to be done, have to turn the light out and get some sleep sometime, awwwww, just another page or two more _then_ I'll do the chores, or _then_ when I finish this chapter I'll go to bed....Awww, just a page or two into this _next_ chapter, _then_ I'll put the book down finally....  You get the idea.  This movie has that sort of appeal.  It's got most, not all but most, every cliche about pirates and many subtle references to the Disney theme park ride in it.  In a slight spoiler, the movie bows a teeny bit to inclusiveness on the part of one of the ship's crews (Captain Jack Sparrow's) so there are plenty of "people who resemble us" in some way on Jack's crew for audience members to identify with.  It's light hearted.  It takes place on water and this summer in real life has been a scorcher, what fun to have than frolicking on a ship's crew on the seas, especially in the Caribbean.  There are witty lines, adult references, but nothing embarrassing.  Despite the obvious pirate cliches and Disney ride references, the movie incorporates these skillfully and you don't mind them in the slightest, it's like taking everything familiar but making it fresh again.  This movie also represents something new and fresh for the summer:  A period piece that doesn't take itself pretentiously or pompously, it's just fun to see and be at the flicks to see it.   Go see it.  Afternoon matinees' don't cost much.  See it how the filmmaker intended, in a pleasant wide-screen theatre so you get the creative impact of it.  In a few more weeks, or less, you won't have that opportunity any more since the autumn crop of movies will crowd the summer films off-screen to home video.   Not a film for kiddies, though.  Enjoy.   ...and really bad eggs...   -------------- Carol Koster Back to top

CarolKoster Disney EchoEar Grand Mouseter Group: Members Posts: 5358 Joined: Aug. 2001 Posted: Aug. 23, 2003 7:37 am/pm P.S. to WebTink and anyone who still hasn't seen this movie yet:  Even though the closing credits last ten times forever, don't give up and leave the theatre until you see the truly closing scene of the movie at the end of the credits.  Stay, stay, STAY to the end of the credits.  It's long, lonely, dull, bring your lunch, bring your knitting, everyone else is leaving, the cleaning crews are coming in...stay through the end and don't give up!  If you enjoyed the movie, thought it was hooty, this scene is what will send you out of the theatre smiling.  Hang in there!   Quasi on topic:  In recent films you'd think of as "Disney", such as "Finding Nemo", "PotC: CotBP" and "Spy Kids 3-D" this summer, it's getting to be a trend to stay through the end of the credits.  Some delightful or fun things happen either during the credits ("Finding Nemo", the "outtakes" in "Monsters, Inc.") or when the credits are totally over ("Pirates", "Spy Kids 3-D").  It's happening more and more frequently.  Check it out.   One last thing:  Whatever Bruckheimer was instructed to do by his movie studio, he obviously did.  He delivered.  This film exceeded expectations, quickly dispelled misleading expectations, surprised everyone, which is likely what Disney wanted to have happen since the spectacular disappointment of both "Country Bears" and "Treasure Planet". -------------- Carol Koster Back to top
