Mickeys on Parade
Mickey Mouse is being honored on the seventy-fifth anniversary of his film debut in a way befitting Disney's top mouse: Seventyfive plaster Mickey statues, each designed by a celebrity artist, will be on display around the country for a year and a half starting in November.
The artists created a diverse range of six-foot-tall figures, Saxophonic Mickey, designed by jazz musician Dave Koz, features a pair of "bells" for ears and a saxophone mouthpiece for a thumb. Koz says that Mickey, like the tenor sax, rings American. "Even though the sax was born in Europe in the 1800s, it really is synonymous with American music and jazz."
Koz's recently released CD, Saxophonic,evokes the title of his Mickey figure. "I had just finished my record about the saxophone, and I thought about how cool an instrument it is, and how cool Mickey is, and how much a part of America he is," says Koz.
Other names on the contributor list include Jamie Lee Curtis, Ben Affleck, Doris Roberts of Everybody Loves Raymond, and the stars of Live with Regis and Kelly. Because most of the contributors aren't fulltime artists, a company called Tivoli Too is doing the hands-on sculpting and painting for the majority of the figures.
Though most of the designers are newcomers to the Disney art department, some are old hands. Roy E. Disney specifically chose animator Andreas Deja and Imagineer John Hench to put their imprints on statues. And lest the next generation be forgotten, several aspiring artists from the nation's best art schools are also taking part.
The completed statues first go on show November 18. Look for the mice throughout Walt Disney World — maybe even on the Disney cruise ships. In April 2004, the Mickey statues will begin a coast-to-coast tour, visiting six to 10 cities and, of course, Disneyland. The final stop, in Spring 2005, is Sotheby's in New York, where the statues will be auctioned off to benefit each artist's favorite children's charity.
