Hey all,
I am new here and will be staying at FW for the first time ! We are a Family of 5 "seasoned" campers, 2 , 7 and 9 year old kids plus my wife and I. We will be coming down from NJ with our 28' Gulfstream c-class motorhome, in the beginning of Jan. 2004. Our stay will be approx. 2 weeks...........all of it in F.W. !!!!! We are all very excited and just counting down the days! This is a great site with lots of great info, but I havent seen this question yet. What Are the best non-preferred loops or sites ? I didnt feel like paying more money just for cable tv hook-up that we would rarely use, if at all, so we just got a regular full hook up site. Maybe theres more to it ? Our family is partial to privacy and peace and QUIET ! A large site would be nice too. We still wouldnt mind being at least somewhat close to trans, pools, comfort stations, and the store( we are bringing all the bikes). I would like to be by the lake but I think that they are preferred loops? By the way, What are the preferred loops, pet loops, full hookup loops, tent loops etc. What are the least desirable sites/loops? I reserved our site online and I didnt get any conformation on site # . Just a conformation saying we had reserved a full hook-up site for the duration of our stay. I did say I would like to be close to comfort station and trans. though. Should I find out ahead of time what site they have us in so I can run it by some of you here? Or do you just get what you get when you check in? Sorry for the long winded first post but I figured a little knowledge can go a long way!
THANKS in advance for any help and advise, and I hope, after our stay, I can help out some first timers too!
Thanks..............Herbie

Yoo Hoo, Herbie!

Congratulations on your coming-up first trip to Fort Wilderness! And thanks for joining the Disney Echo and telling us about your plans. Here's a wilderness-inspired set of Disney EchoEars for you:

You bring up a lot of good questions, but I'll leave it to more experienced Fort Wilderness campers to answer them. We've got a lot of experts here, but I'm not one of them -- I've only stayed there one trip in a Fort Wilderness cabin.

But I'm sure others will share their opinions here with you, Herbie. Welcome to the Disney Echo!

Ah, Herbie, you are looking for that elusive perfect site.  Sorry to say, it does not exist.  That being said, you must prioritize.  Look at a map of FW and you will see that some loops are closer to the main activities, some more remote.   I will say this - in general, the sites are quiet, well wooded to provide privacy from your neighbors, and even the most remote site on the loop is not too far from a comfort station.  Bus routes run on the three main North South roads on FW, so if you want to be close to a route plan accordingly.  You will, however, get more bus noise the closer you are to a route.  Site selection is not done ahead of time.  You can ask for a particular loop, but there is no guarantee you will get it.  But really, don't fret.  All sites are good.  And with bikes, you will be set as far as getting around FW.   :coonskin:

:clapping: Welcome Herbie,

I don't know if you can call us experienced FtW campers since our first visit was just last May with a scheduled return in December, but let me put in my 2 cents.

I agree there is no way to give you the perfect campsite.  I also agree that the sites are pretty close to being the same.  There are some important differences such as the size shape and layout that can effect the judgement of perfection.  Factor in also that what is perfect for my family may be total YUCK for your's.

During our May trip we stayed in the 1600 pet loop and rented a golf cart to run around in.  (Now I have my own that I bought cheap on e-bay and fixed up so look out! ) Our son (age 13) had his bike and we let him go off to the pool or explore on his own and we kept in touch via our Motorola 2 way radios.

My wife and I took a couple of leisurely exploration rides to find OUR perfect campsite.  Since we have a dog, we narrowed our search for perfection to the 300 (preferred) and 1600, 1700, 1800 and 1900 because he always goes camping with us.

We looked at the layout of the sites, the comfort stations (bathrooms with showers and laundry), how close they were to the pet walk along the canal, whether they had a drop off or not, etc.  Given all that we found what we call our perfect choice in campsite 1918. It is a fairly private site tucked back in the farthest corner of loop 1900.

1918 is a little far from the Comfort Station, but privacy got our vote since we use the CS pretty much just for our morning shower ("3-S") routines anyway and our motorhome bathroom during the night.  Heck one morning the CS in our loop was very busy.  Rather than wait, I jumped in the golf cart and found one in another loop that I had all to myself. :eyebrow:

Its fairly shaded and there is a good amount of growth between the neighboring site to the left.  On the right there is no close neighbor.  NICE.  It also is one of the few in loop 1900 that did not have a drop off either on the side or the back.  Best of all...there is a little trail at the back of the site that leads through a little wooded area right onto the pet walk.  PERFECT!  Our dog does not like other dogs so having a way to sneak him for a walk instead of along the main road is a nice feature.

Well thats our story and we're sticking to it.   :cowboy:

Hello Herbie and welcome to the Fort Wilderness Forum.   :)

On to your questions:

"Best" is subjective.  Our favorite non-preferred, full hookup loops are 1200 and 1300.  Specifically, we like the sites that are near the Comfort Station shared by these two loops.  The sites are large, typically well shaded and as quiet as a non-pet loop would be.  I believe the quietest full hookup loops are pet loops 1800 and 1900 as they're the farthest from roads (bus noise), pools, Campfire Program, etc.  Back to 1200/1300.  We feel these loops are a good compromise between quiet and being within walking distance of the Meadows Trading Post/Bike Barn/main swimming pool.  The bus stop is close too and there's a nice little playground which our kids always enjoyed.  Finally, yes, the loops by the lake are preferred loops.

2. By the way, What are the preferred loops, pet loops, full hookup loops, tent loops etc.

Preferred loops (full hookup plus cable tv) are 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 700, 1400.

Pet loops (full hookup) are 300, 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900.  Sometimes other loops are designated pet loops temporarily.

Partial hookup (water, electricity, no sewer) loops are 1500, 2000.

Full hookup, non-preferred, non-pet loops are 600, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300.

Guests can and do tent camp on all loops but tent campers and those with pop-ups often use the partial hookup loops.

3. What are the least desirable sites/loops?

Very subjective.  I personally don't like the 1000 loop because it shares a Comfort Station with the 900 loop and it can be a fairly long walk to get to it.  Others, I hope, will chime in on their preferences.

4. I reserved our site online and I didnt get any conformation on site # . Just a conformation saying we had reserved a full hook-up site for the duration of our stay. I did say I would like to be close to comfort station and trans. though. Should I find out ahead of time what site they have us in so I can run it by some of you here?

Fort Wilderness doesn't get the reservations from Central Reservations until a few days before you arrive so no one knows what site you'll get until just before you arrive.  All you can do is make them aware of your preferences and you've done that.  Be sure to reiterate your preferences when you're checking in...sometimes they get lost in the shuffle.  Just say something like "Did you receive my request to be near a Comfort Station and bus stop?".  If you have a loop preference or specific site request they'll note that too but cannot guarantee that you'll get any of your requests.

I hope this info helps.   :coonskin:

our favorites are: for a preferred loop is 1400,  we usually get full hook up though and we like 1100 , 1200, 1300,  not many "Bad" sites,  just depends on your preference,  if you do not like the site they assign  look around and call up front,  they often will let you switch if the site is available,

Have a great trip!! :mickey:  :mickey:

We have stayed several times....never requested a specific site....and always had a beautiful site!

Unlike some campgrounds I've been too that have nice sites....and then the "next-to-the-dumpster, by-the-sewage-treatment-plant" sites, I really don't think there is a BAD site here!

The sites are roomy, most have nice shade around them, some have flowing water near them.  I would choose a site preference by how important it is to you to be in a certain place within the campground (like wanting to be close to a bus station, the Outpost....or something like that! )

The only complaint you will have about FW is that once you have stayed there, you will compare every other campground to FW!!!

We have been to a lot of them and I have to say FtW wins hands down as the best in the universe.

Ditto Karen's statement re. FW ruining you for other campgrounds.  It's no wonder many of us refer to our annual trips to FW as "going home."  By the way, I will be going home in 10 days!!!

Thanks, for all the info and advise about the sites. I think we will just let it ride and see what site we get when we check in! I cant really see asking for a certain site or loop since I havent been there yet anyway. We will just do some snooping around when we get there and see if there is a site or loop we really like more than others and ask to be moved. Or even for a future trip. From what it sounds like, we wont get a bad site anyway! CANT WAIT !!!!
Thanks all !!!...........Herbie
