You know that area across the road from where you enter into Fort Wilderness? It had thick woods until a few years ago, then Disney went in and cleared a lot of the trees out.

What they were doing was preparing the site for an addition to the Fort Wilderness resort area, to be called Wilderness Junction. Those plans are currently on hold, but there are plans on the books for adding on to Fort Wilderness/Wilderness Lodge with more wilderness-themed Disney resorts.

Rich,

I'd heard such a rumor when the trees were cut down; however, when I asked the Cast Members at Fort Wilderness about it, what I was told was that it had nothing to do with Wilderness Junction.  Instead, they said Disney was simply harvesting the trees off the lot.

Wilderness Junction has been "on the drawing board" for many years but has never gotten any further.  Unfortunately, I don't believe it ever will.  I just don't see the financial incentive for Disney to do it.  They seem more interested in expanding the Disney Vacation Club type properties.

If I could change one thing, it would be phone lines to the campsites, the reason is I really miss my Mickey wake up call when we stay at Ft. Wilderness.  (I've burned it to a CD, and hit play for the rest of the family when I get up now).   Still trying to figure out if I can get them to call my cellphone instead.

Kimski :)

I have to agree how expensive it is to rent a golf cart.  After our May trip, I came up with a great idea.

BUY MY OWN GOLF CART.  Not only could we use it at FtW, but at the other campgrounds we go to.  Sure beats walking a mile to go poddy.

I began checking online auctions and found several on e-bay. Some of them were pretty expensive.  I found one with a low opening bid and kept outbidding til I won.  I paid $500 for it and put about $100 and some sweat equity into it to fixing it up. Now it runs and looks like new and will be ready for our 10 days staying at FtW in December.   :talktohand:

I put the prices they charge at Fort Wilderness out of my mind after I saw we couldn't afford to rent one. Have you figured out how many days it would have taken to rent one there to "pay off" your buying one and fixing it up?

At the rate of $45, which is about what it is per day including tax, it would take about 13 1/2 days to be in the red.  Our upcoming December stay is 10 days in itself which makes it close to being worth it for that one trip alone.  :eyebrow:

Had we not had some trailer problems, we would have used it in August when we went to NH for 8 days.  Unfortunately as we were just about ready to head out, we found out that the tilt mechanism had gotten rusty and when we forced it we bent it and it would not line up to lock the bed back in place. That is all fixed now.

In some of the campgrounds we visit, the GC is a nice convenience.  We notice that there are a few everywhere we go particularly the bigger campgrounds where the bathhouse is sometimes 1/2 mile or farther away (like one of our favorites in NH that we visited in August).  There are others (our very favorites) which have several bathrooms more conveniently located around the the campground and where the GC is not needed. :laughbig:

Besides, I really got a huge bargain. The cart (which is nice clean quiet electric) had all new batteries installed about 1 month before I got it. The previous owner didn't know much about electrical systems and thought something major was wrong like the motor since it was not operating properly.  I got hold of a service manual and read up on the system and was able to diagnose the problem to a faulty solenoid which sells for about $15. Instead of changing just the bad one, I went ahead and changed all 5 and checked and cleaned up the other electrical components.  Then we did some body work and repainted it, installed some headlights and some chrome hubcaps. Now it looks and runs better than new.  I am confident, based on ads I have seen, that I could sell it for 3 or 4 times what I paid for it.
