If you were King (Eisner) for a day, what one thing would you do to make Fort Wilderness a more enjoyable Disney resort destination?

Gotta tell ya, Jeff, I would rehab River Country and make it the themed pool for FW.

Mickeysdad beat me to it -- that's my answer, too!

Okay, since that one's taken, how about this? I'd find a way to cut down on the biting bug population at Fort Wilderness.

I preface this with the fact I haven't stayed at FW since 1998.

I would add more bus runs to get you to and from the parks and DTD.  That was one large complaint my DW has when we stay there and the main reason she is reluctant to go back.  Also, FW buses to get you directly to DTD, MGM, AK (I believe they have this one?) and Epcot.

I know WDW has tried some things but am not sure if they were successful.

I like the River Country rehab for the three area resorts, FW, WL and WLV, too.  Oops, that's two..sorry!

I'd have to go with improving the transportation situation.  Specifically, I'd set up the buses such that they ran more like the other resorts, i.e., buses that run directly to/from the parks and Downtown Disney.  I'd have them circulate within the resort, pick up guests, who shouldn't wait more than 15 minutes for a bus, and then exit to the parks.  The existing bus system is a step in that direction...if they'd just do away with the bus transfers at the Outpost and Settlement Depots.

The next item on my list would be to either upgrade the existing pools or, as was already mentioned, reopen & redesignate River Country as the "Wilderness Swimmin' Hole" for use by the Fort, Wilderness Lodge and Wilderness Lodge Villas.  A variation on that would be to reopen RC, make it complimentary to the Wilderness resorts but charge other Disney guests for its use.  Heck, I'd even be willing to pay a little extra to stay at Fort Wilderness if RC entry was included in the price.

No doubt  about what I would do. I would add a top quality pool that would be themed as good as the other resort pools. It would be near River Country and River country would reopen for the guests staying at the Wildreness.  :clapping:

Oooo! I want to amend my answer!

The one thing I would change would be to have a biting-bug-free environment for Fort Wilderness that you could travel around on the refurbished steam train that used to be there, which would have convenient stops near the campgrounds as well as stopping at River Country for the use of Fort Wilderness & Wilderness Lodge Guests for free!

Yeah, they could charge extra for River Country for folks who aren't staying at those two resorts. That would be okay by me.
:D

Fixing the problems with River Country and opening it gets my vote!  When we first began planning for our May 2003 visit, we were excited that RC was so conveniently located at FtW.  Heck we even thought of just hanging out at FtW and not even doing the park hopping thang!  Then came the news that it would remain closed through 2002.  OK we thought they were refurbishing it and it might be open by May 2003 in time for our visit. NOPE! The notices began to read "closed indefinitely".  What a huge waste!

Eisner and the other decision makers have to realize that not all of us like huge water slides that hurdle you 60 mph in a park where you lose your kid (like we did). Sometimes bigger and faster isn't better.  Besides those pools are boring and FtW needs a themed swimming hole!!!

I have a few things I'd change or return to FW.

1. Claim River Country for the regular guests at FW.

2. Figure out a way (which will never happen) to revamp, reclaim, and rebuild the FW Railroad. We used to go there just to ride that old train. Got very upset when I found it rusting out behind DC-6. But, now it's gone but at least it's in the hands of those who would want to restore much of it. I fear that most of it's in California though.

3. Hire a Cart Cop. I'm tired of jumping out of the way of kids who's parents rent a golf cart and then hand the keys to their 14 year olds and turn them loose. A little gizmo in the carts that would shut the thing off when a kid was driving it would be great. I'm sure that the folks in Immagineering could  invent one. Kind of like the Knuckle scanner they now use for park ID's.

:hurt:

But, no matter what, it's still the best campground in the USA and I can't wait to get back.
