Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Religious services will no longer be offered at the Luau Cove at Disney's Polynesian Resort effective this coming Sunday, August 11, 2003.

Although the nearby Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine (MQotUS) Roman Catholic Church in Lake Buena Vista is truly awe-inspiring, I shall miss the good times I had at Mass outdoors at the Polynesian.

Now there will only be Mass in the convention center at Disney's Contemporary Resort on Christmas mornings and Easter mornings. Be sure to check out (MQotUS) because they have Masses on Saturday and Sunday at various times and the shrine has no congregation of its own -- It was built for and continues to be solely for tourists in the Orlando area. They've posted an explanation of why the Masses at WDW stopped.

There is no shuttle service from WDW to the shrine so if you don't have your own car or a rental car you should take a taxi. Note that to take a taxi from a WDW Resort such as the Polynesian it will cost about $50 roundtrip. If you are on a tight budget you might consider taking a Disney bus to Downtown Disney and then take a taxi to MQotUS from there instead because the fare will be cheaper since it is a shorter distance to travel. It will be less convenient, however.

Perhaps the best option for those without their own car and who haven't rented a car for their vacation would be to take the free shuttle from their WDW resort to the National / Alamo rental car center near the Magic Kingdom parking toll plaza and then rent a car for one day. This should cost you less than $30 if you don't take the insurance (your own car insurance might cover rental cars, too, so save your money if that's the case).

Yoo Hoo, Rich!

I thought this odd, as they recently rescheduled the services and made new signs, but a call to the Polynesian Resort just confirmed it. Effective immediately, no more Sunday services of any denomination at Luau Cove.

As you say, there are lots of places nearby to worship. If anyone needs a referral, I'll be happy to check local listings you.

Yoo Hoo, Rufus!

Yes, they had just recently announced that one of the 2 Catholic Mass services was being cancelled - - maybe that was just a test to gauge reaction? Or maybe something else is going on. Anyway, thanks for the confirmation on the bad news that all religious services have now been cancelled at the Polynesian, and thus at WDW itself.
:unhappy:

There was always a wonderful sense of community attending Mass at the Polynesian that I'll miss. It was always a great feeling of being outdoors, one with nature as well as fellow Disney fans, attending services outdoors at Luau Cove. Hearing the boat and train whistles nearby added to the thrill.

Plus, a small part of me always wished that one day Mickey himself would show up to worship with us.

Hey, Rufus, do you go so far back as to remember when there used to be Mass at one of the WDW hotels on Hotel Blvd.? (Now called the Downtown Disney Resort Hotels.)
