UPDATE: This topic has been moved out of the Disney Rumors area of the Disney Echo into the Walt Disney World forum because Disney has now officially announced this new attraction in the August 2003 Mickey Monitor, a publication for WDW Annual Passholders -- as well as the October 2003 media event -- so it is no longer a rumor! See below for that report from the Mickey Monitor.

Amazing Stunt Show Spectacular at Disney-MGM Studios

Disney-MGM Studios guests will be on the edge of their seats as the secrets behind Hollywood's most astounding stunts unfold at the new Disney-MGM Studios stunt show. An all-new car and motorcycle stunt show, inspired by the popular Disneyland Paris Stunt Show Spectacular, will debut at Disney-MGM Studios theme park at Walt Disney World Resort in 2005. Insiders will reveal coveted show secrets detailing how Tinseltown's stunts are created, designed and filmed for the movies. Filmed images are revealed on an oversized screen, illustrating how the use of different camera angles can add drama to filmed scenes -- this is in addition to the "in your face" live stunts!

This addition is part of a larger redevelopment of the backlot area of Disney-MGM Studios that also includes new cityscapes, adding Chicago and San Francisco to the existing New York City skyline.

The Backlot Theater won't be the only thing torn out, according to the rumor mill. Residential Street and all the houses on it will also be torn up! That part of the backlot tour has to come out so the tram route can be rerouted to
include Catastrophe Canyon without getting in the way of the Auto Stunt Show.

Now think about that. This would inpact the Osborne Lights: There won't be any for the Christmas season of 2003 because there won't be any Residential Street to put them on.

However, the rumor goes on to say that the Osborne Lights will return for the holidays in 2004, with a new location: New York Street.

So, take a ride on the tram at D-MGM as soon as you can. It might be your last look at the Golden Girls' house.

Although just a rumor, this has been confirmed by more than one WDW Cast Member.

Yoo Hoo, Rufus!

Have the bulldozers begun tearing down Residential Street at D-MGM yet?

Not yet, but they have begun tearing down one of the New York Street buildings across from the Backlot Theater. The Theater itself is being used to store some of the Osborne Lights that are normally kept in the Residential Street buildings, so it appears that the rumors are not beyond the range of credibility.

The Tram Tour was down for about a week while they rerouted it. It has reopened on a new route that still includes both Residential Street and Catastrophe Canyon. Haven't been on since, so don't know the details.

So far, the only thing I'm going to miss is the "Singing in the Rain" umbrella.

 I'm really kindof upset about the christmas lights being gone this year.  We will be going back to DWD in November during thanksgiving.  The lights are something we go see every time we are at disney during thanksgiving.  I'm really going to miss this piece of christmas magic.  Are they moving the Hunchback of Notre Dame or will it not be showing this year either?   :(

The Hunchback show closed last year and won't be returning. :unhappy:

Thats a shame about the Hunchback...is there a reason they closed that show?  Will they be redoing the backlot tour area?  I noticed the Osbournes lights display was returning next year on New York St, will that be part of the backlot tour, or is the backlot tour gone also?  We dont spend alot of time in MGM, however, we do light the Hunchback show as well as the Osbourne lights display.  Its a little disappointing for our upcoming trip.

I have a hunch...

I don't think it was as well-attended as it once was, due to the decreased overall attendance at D-MGM as well as the Hunchback of Notre Dame movie is kinda long in the tooth and not a big fave with little ones or families like the D-MGM's Beauty and the Beast show is.

I'd like to see more movies turned into attractions, anyway - - not just shows (or even worse, just meet-and-greet areas and parade appearances, like Lilo and Stitch). C'mon, let's have some new movie rides!

Now they have!

All of the residential street buildings have now been demolished, and work is now underway on the canal that runs behind residential street.

18 July 2003: Demolition

The demolition of Residential Street is proceeding, with 2 buildings now completely removed from the site.

Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Who's moving Residential Street?
The transformation taking place at Disney-MGM Studios is set to be finished in 2005. That's when we'll debut an action-packed new stunt spectacular. Please note that in order to bring you this new E-ticket attraction, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights will not take place this year.
