Mickey, Donald, Other Disney Characters To Appear in 3-D in New Magic Kingdom Attraction

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Disney magic meets Disney music in a new 3-D film spectacular debuting in 2003 at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World Resort.

"Mickey's PhilharMagic" will star Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other favorite Disney characters animated in a way they've never before been seen: grand, glorious, in-your-face three dimensions.

"We're really excited about this new attraction," said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "Guests love the Disney characters and films, and this gives them the chance to take a magical ride right into the world of Disney animation."

The "Mickey's PhilharMagic" cast will include Mickey and Donald, as well as Ariel from "The Little Mermaid," Aladdin and Jasmine from "Aladdin" and Simba from "The Lion King."

Set in the PhilharMagic Concert Hall, which replaces "Legend of the Lion King" in Fantasyland, the eye-popping 3-D experience will unfold on one of the largest screens ever created for a 3-D film, a 150-foot-wide canvas. Complete with in-theater effects, the attraction will immerse guests in the richly animated world of the Disney characters.

The Walt Disney Company has experimented with animating the Disney characters in 3-D before, most notably in "Working for Peanuts," a 1953 Donald Duck/Chip 'n' Dale cartoon short, but never on a scale as grand as "Mickey's PhilharMagic." The attraction is being produced through the combined efforts of Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Feature Animation.

"We're always exploring ways to take 3-D to the next level," said Tom Fitzgerald, executive vice president and senior creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering. "From 'Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 3D' to 'Honey, I Shrunk the Audience' to 'It's Tough to be a Bug!' we keep looking for new ways to allow guests to become a part of the action and story. "

'Mickey's PhilharMagic' will be the most animated, energetic and magical 3-D show we've ever created!"

Mickey's PhilharMagic will have no 'cheap 3-D tricks'

Mickey's PhilharMagic will give new meaning to 'classic character' attraction when the Magic Kingdom 3-D film experience debuts in October.

The film follows the adventures of Donald Duck as he pursues Mickey Mouse's sorcerer hat through a musical world of characters and scenes from several famous Disney animated films.

The film will feature a variety of gags and special theater effects that complement the film.

Kevin Rafferty, senior show writer and director for Walt Disney Imagineering, said the attraction was designed for guests of all ages. "We wanted to create an attraction for the Magic Kingdom Park that would have some really wonderful 'reach' moments with the characters," Kevin said. "Flounder swims right up to us... Tinker Bell comes out and beckons us to follow her."

Unlike other 3-D films at Disney theme parks, this film will employ a 150-foot wide seamless screen -- the largest built for an attraction by Walt Disney Imagineering -- that will appear when the lights go out during the show and wrap around the audience.

"We developed a seamless projection technology where the screen is able to contain one giant image," Kevin said. "It's kind of a horseshoe shape that wraps around the audience to immerse them into those animated worlds. Once the proscenium magically disappears, you won't see anything that reminds you that you're in a theater."

Kevin said the attraction will appeal to guests of all nationalities. "We challenged ourselves to make this work for people who don't speak English, since many of our Magic Kingdom guests come from other countries," Kevin said. "We didn't give Donald a lot of dialogue. The great thing about him is that you don't understand much of what he says anyway, but when he squawks, everybody understands the attitude. And in a lot of countries where musical films are presented, the lyrics are in English. That's how they've heard these films and remember them."

To make Donald's dialogue authentic, Kevin listened to 997 original recordings of Clarence 'Ducky' Nash, the original voice of Donald Duck, from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. "I have a long commute home, so I spent countless hours listening to these recordings," Kevin said. "Some of the things I heard on the tapes influenced and enhanced the script. We essentially built the soundtrack to Donald's dialogue from three decades of existing Donald lines. Tony Anselmo (the current voice of Donald Duck) filled in pieces, but the dialogue guests will hear is basically classic 'Ducky' Nash." Kevin said he's proud to work on an attraction featuring classic Disney characters.

"The characters are really the heart of soul of our company," Kevin said. "We should never underestimate their value for our guests. They are who the guests want to see. They're the celebrities. They're the stars. One of the things I'm most excited about is having the opportunity to be part of a team that is bringing classic characters to life in a way guests have never seen them before -- not only in computer imagery, but in computer 3-D imagery."

Hope I get to see this when I go on my solo trip in October!  Even if it's all I get to do all day at MK, it'll be worth it, I bet!

Yoo Hoo, Marianne!

Too bad you won't be at WDW one week earlier... you're going to miss being there when me and my family are by one week! I hope the attraction doesn't have problems while I'm there and it is in soft opening, I really want to see it!
:smart:

By the way, here's the latest Disney Echo Avatar:
