Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

This is breaking news, just crossing the wires and news channels. I'm putting together this report from a number of different news sources.

During a lightning storm Monday, Guests on the Kilimanjaro Safari saw lightning strike the 6-year-old giraffe named Betsy. According to officials, the giraffe died instantly. "To the best of my knowledge, it was a quick death," Disney spokeswoman Diane Ledder said today. "It's very unfortunate and unusual."

She said Betsy was the first animal to die from a lightning strike at WDW. “It’s very unfortunate and unusual ... but it has happened in the past” at other U.S. parks, she said.

According to Diane, Disney's Animal Kingdom park is equipped with lightning rods throughout the safari area in order to protect the animals. During bad weather the animals can also be brought inside, but this thunderstorm came so fast they didn't have enough warning, she said.

WKMG-TV was told that dozens of WDW Guests in the safari trucks saw the lightning bolt hit the giraffe.

Kinda takes the thrill off of hearing that Little Red was saved, doesn't it?

Poor Betsy-and the poor guest who witnessed it-I would have been horrified. Here's one to Betsy.... :musicsad:

Lest we forget...

Here's Betsy and friend in a shot I took a few weeks ago, in happier times.

Yoo Hoo, Gang!

I was there when my husband Rich shot the video on the Safari attraction at AK/WDW. It was raining then too, lots, though I don't recall any thunder and lightning. So conditions in mid-June 2003 were almost the same as on Monday for poor Betsy the Giraffe.

You'd think Betsy would've learned by then, huh? ;-)

But I challenge my DH on some points in his report. ;-)

Rich claims the photo he posted was of "Betsy". Which giraffe? Is one Betsy, or is one a body double (like Senator Amadala in the Star Wars I and II movies)? How can DH tell one of those giraffes in his captured frame was female, or male, or both of one or the other? How many giraffes does Disney have? Do they appear on the tour in rotation, or is what we saw all the giraffes Disney has? What's the difference from several hundred feet away between a male and a female giraffe unless you peek under their tails which was not possible for Guests on the tour?

None of Rich's media sources tell this information, so I challenge DH to prove that was Betsy in his photo.

Ol' Betsy.....

That was the name of Davy Crockett's rifle, y'know.

Wonder if that's why Disney named the giraffe "Betsy". Wonder if Rich can find that out.

Bye Bye Betsy.....

Isn't that the name of a Broadway musical? Kinda like Elvis, idn't it?

Betsy has left the building....

(From Rich:  Where's a dead giraffe emoticon when you need one.... ;-))

:musicsad:

Yoo Hoo, Gang,

If the incident happened Monday, why are we finding out about it Wednesday?

Betsy.....I hardly knew ye......

Seriously, the Guests who happened to see this, CMs and animal tenders and veternarians too, must've been shocked (no joke or pun intended). Glad with the storm that no person was injured or killed by the same lightning strike, a few feet made all the difference, y'know. A close one.  :o

If there's any consolation in this sad incident, it's that Betsy did not die in a zoo.  ;)

Gee, Rich....this is so sad. Thank you so much for writing this for us and adding the picture, too.   :( By the way, Carol...it's nice to *meet ya*, even if it is under such sad circumstances. I saw your pics at the Poly and you sure have a lovely family!

I'm not sticking my neck out by saying this, but, the taller one, of course! That's why that particular one was struck by lightning.
  Thank you, thank you. Hold your applause until the end.

Next question!

We went on two safaris that day, one right after another (except for the short Fastpass line for the second one). Both times there were only two giraffes. I rest my case.

You didn't check that days meet 'n greet handout? It says right here... Betsy the giraffe appearing today in Kilimanjaro Safari.
See? See?

Please, please! This is a family forum. Take that kind of talk to the discussion about the "Making of Me" Epcot attraction.

It takes a long time for rigor mortis to set in on a giraffe! Next?

Sure I can prove it! Here's a clip of Betsy at the actual time she was struck by lightning, with the Guests eyewitnesses verifying the whole thing:

No, Betsy has left the savannah...

She died in Nahtazu.

Yes, it is sad. But it is nature doing its thing, that whole circle of life bit ya know.

I'm just thankful if the lightning had to strike out there it didn't hit the Guests.
