Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

It is possible that the Disney Echo will be down for maintanance, along with all of emuck.com, for a few hours tonight (Tuesday, June 10th).

Information for techies: A flaky disk drive and some IDE cables will be replaced tonight with a new drive and cables. Unfortunately, that drive contains the root and /usr partitions, so there's a need to transfer these over to the new disk, which will take some time (transferring gigabytes of information takes quite a bit of time). The other partitions on that drive can be transferred over after the new drive is installed.

lar3ry wrote me that he installed the new drive about 4 PM (Eastern time), and spent a couple of hours transferring the root and /usr file systems to the new system and rebooting the system on the new drive.

That said, the system should be more stable than before.

However, he says he still needs to replace the old drive, and to do that, he needs to transfer the rest of the partitions to the new drive.

He's doing the file transfer now, and it should be complete Wednesday morning (June 11th).

Note that he'll need to shut down the system to remove the old drive and reinstall his DVD drive (which is where the new drive is installed currently). That should be a down time of about 10-15 minutes... hopefully not noticeable in the early morning.

lar3ry wrote that at about 3 am this morning, he removed the old drive and replaced it with the new drive. At the same time, he replaced the IDE cables on that controller with new ones (just in case).

The system came up with no problems, and he hopes that the recent crashes are now a thing of the past.

Note that he will be taking some time this weekend to upgrade the operating system to RedHat 9.0, so there will be further downtime (about 2-3 hours) coming down the road.

Hardware replacement was successful.

One more word of warning:  I will be upgrading the operating system sometime this weekend (Saturday morning seems most likely).  This will cause further downtime, but this will be a scheduled one rather than a "surprise" when I find the system not responding ( like I did the past few days! ).

Sorry for all the ups and downs.  ("Ahh, the life of a sysadmin..."  To get a better feel for what a sysadmin has to live with, check out ComputerWorld's Shark Tank).
