Bob Hope - Thanks for the 100 Years of Memories

July 28— Legendary comic Bob Hope, whose self-deprecating jokes about his ski-slope nose, ineptitude with women and bad golf swing delighted audiences for decades, died late last night. He was 100.

My friend Ken Pellman paid tribute to Bob Hope on his Centennial Birthday. Ken wrote: "Hope’s connection with Disney went back to Walt. Years after Disneyland Park opened, Hope recounted how, when the park was in development, Walt had asked him to buy property around the site, because Walt couldn’t afford to spend more and he’d rather someone like Hope oversee the surrounding property than someone he didn’t know. Hope declined, and later regretted the missed financial opportunity when Disneyland Park became a world-class destination."

In 1978, Bob Hope appeared on the "NBC Salutes the 25th Anniversary of the Wonderful World of Disney" TV show and 1971 he was at WDW when it first opened and appeared on "The Grand Opening of Walt Disney World" telecast. He truly admired Walt Disney, saying of his friend, "Walt Disney loved America because his dreams came true ... The entire world owes Walt a great debt. He achieved much, but perhaps his greatest accomplishment is that he made children of us all."

Thanks for the memories, Bob. Thanks for the 100 years of memories.

On the news reports today, one of my favorite Bob Hope jokes was when he said, ""I'm so old, they cancelled my blood type!"

There is more about Bob Hope on http://www.bobhope.com, the official website of Bob Hope.

He was so funny and the self-deprecation is what is missing in most humor today.  One of the quotes I heard today on the news was about when he was in Vietnam and there was some shelling that seemed quite near, he supposedly said, "I wonder which of my movies they saw!"  Anyone who can laugh at themselves like that is a-okay in my book.  Doesn't it just seem like he was your favorite uncle or something?  He was just a part of our life, a part of the American landscape.  He will be missed, but thankfully we have his wonderful legacy of film and television to view.

Thanks for the memories, Bob.
