I am overwhelmed in making plans for our upcoming trip with my parents....I am used to thinking strollers & diapers. This time it's wheelchairs and shade trees!

My mother is in Stage 4 cancer. She is very weak and yet really wants to go with my family to Disney one more time. My father shattered both of his feet recently and can walk only short distances at a time.

Sooo....here's where I need everyone's help. I think the motorized wheelchairs would help us tremendously! BUT....aren't they only available 1st come/1st served at the parks? If that is the case, are there any options so we can have these kinds of wheelchairs at all times? I know neither of them will be able to make walking from our room to the monorail or bus, much less around the parks!

If need be, I think we would need to rent a couple of them from an outside company....Anyone with any experience in this situation that can give me some direction???

Thanks so much for your input!

Yoo Hoo, Karen / kecall!

I think that Kelly D./dizneluver9 will have some specific advice for you, but I think you're best bet may be to rent a motorized wheelchair from one of the off-site companies. I think they deliver.

Where do you plan on staying? The Contemporary has wheelchair access for the monorail now (it didn't originally have it) as do all of the Magic Kingdom resorts. I believe all the WDW boat transportation is wheelchair-accessible, too. Not all of the buses have the ability to transport wheelchairs, however. So keep that in mind when you are thinking about what parks and resorts you like the best.

Did you check out the other messages in this forum which point to the WDW Guests with Disabilities FAQ? There's a lot of helpful tips there, too, which might put you more at ease.

And I am pleased to welcome you to the Disney Echo, Karen! Here's a special pair of Disney EchoEars I've picked out for you to help make your WDW vacation even more magical!

Thanks for joining the fun here, Karen!

The MK Resort Monorails have had accessiblity by way of ramps being avaliable at all stations for quite some time now...and the Epcot Monorail is accessable in the same way....as well  the Ferry going accross the Lagoon btw the TTC and MK is accesible too.

Buses....The newer buses are accesible but can take a limited number of wheelchairs/scooters at a time.  There's not really any way that I know of to know which routes the buses are on.

Mears Transportation has accesable  vans which is a taxi service that could take you from one place to another on or off property as well.  Not sure of their cost though.

Let me know if any of this helps :)
