Well I can tell you from experience that I have requested a specific room and gotten it

Yoo Hoo, Tikiman!

I have, too -- as recently as this past April.

I can only think of 3 possible reasons for what I was told this morning:
  • As you suggest, it might depend on the CM  you get. Perhaps if I had called and gotten a different front desk manager my request would have been processed then and there, as it was in April.
  • I got lucky in April and the treatment I received then wasn't the policy of how rooms are assigned.
  • This is a new policy, perhaps in response to increasing room requests by Guests because of increased knowledge due to places on the internet like your Polynesian pages and the Disney Echo forum.

and also I have checked in to a room and did not like the view because there were bushes and trees growing right next to the lagoon view so I went back to the desk and asked to see what other lagoon view rooms were available and got into another room. I have also just asked at the desk when I check in what rooms are open and basically picked my room. Now I am sure this works different depending on the CM you get and they are in no way required to give you a choice of room at check in but in most cases if you approach them with a good attitude (not demanding) they will do their best. As far as requests for a building ahead of time I have no experience with that because I have never done that but when I have paid for a lagoon view or even better, a lagoon view concierge there are little or no options of building.

I agree totally with this. If for any legitimate reason you are not happy with the room, either while at the check-in desk or when you are shown your room, ask right then if you can be assigned to a different room instead.

Rich,
I followed your advice and sent a fax 3 days before we arrived at to Polynesian. Upon our arrival on the 23rd of September at 11am the cast member that checked us in told me that they had recieved my fax and that my room request could be granted and that our room was ready for us now (11am...YES!!!;) Needless to say the next eight days and nights were wonderful. I got to see Mickeys Philharmagic 4 times and the Wishes fireworks show went off unannounced on Mon. night (29th) around 10 pm. Sat the 28th was the only day we had any lines at all in any of the parks. The Magic Kingdom was the most packed I have ever seen it in my 6 trips to WDW, including the summer visits.

                                     Thanks Again,
                                                    D.J.
