Yoo Hoo, D.J. / djfur2!

First of all, I'm glad you used the word "request" -- because that is what it truly is. There's no guarantee you'll get the area or specific room you request, so keep that in mind and don't be upset if you don't get your wish.

I've had great luck with this method:
  • First, have your request noted on your reservation. You can do this when you first make your reservation or call back at another time if you forget to have them add it.
  • Second, call the resort's front desk manager (or concierge desk if that's where you're staying) or FAX them. Do this in the morning (Orlando business hours) about 3 days before your arrival. I've had great luck when I've personally talked with the manager at the front desk.
  • Lastly, when you check in, ask if your request was granted. If it hasn't been, see if the room you wanted is available, or at least one similar to it.

Great question, D.J.! Welcome to the Disney Echo. I'm guessing you're about to have a vacation at WDW's Polynesian Resort, so I have this pair of Disney EchoEars complete with lei for you now:

Aloha!

Rich,
Thanks for the advice I will try it. My wife and I are going on a second honeymoon and would like to stay in the same room we had 20 years ago.We arrive 9/23 for 8 nights. The best part is no kids this time!!! so we get to be the kids

That's a very valid request!!! Be sure and mention that (I'm sure you intended to)

Congratulations on your second honeymoon, and I hope you get that room.

I've read in one of your post that you can call and request for a specific room and building.  Do you have that phone number?I planned on faxing the request but, I will be having surgery in three weeks and will not have access to a fax machine as I will be out of work for three weeks and then I will be heading to WDW for my vacation.  Thanks in advance. :minnie:

Aloha to all,

Here is what worked for us Starting on 8/29/03.  First, we booked off season at a time of year when park attendance is low or in transition.  This improves the odds of having your room choice available.

Next, we gave our three preferences when we book the room months in advance (approx May 03 when they first offered the 7 nights for the price of 4 deal).

Give the resort three options for your preferrence.  Tikiman is correct, we could not really identify ANY room location at the resort where we would NOT have been DELIGHTED to be assigned.  It is fast and delightful to get from any point to any point within the resort and being close to the TTC was just a SUPER convenience which when used makes one feel that each dollar spent for the room was well worth it.  Fast access to the TTC is better than just fast access to the Magic Kingdom only.

We did not call or fax to confirm that our request was noted at the front desk.  We arrived in person at the front desk on the night of 8/28/03.  To do that, we book a low priced, but nice room outside the main gate and plan on a later in the day ETA.  This time, we "landed" in time to have supper at Trail's End and use Disney boats, buses and monorail to drop in at the Polynesian just to say Aloha and check the booking status.

Finally,  arrive at the front desk EARLY.  We drove into the Polynesian parking lot about 5 after 7 AM.  No one else was in line to check in at this time.  My wife bet me $15 that we would get our room key at that time of day.  She won.  Cast members were amused at the big loud celebration going on at the front desk...worse than a super bowl touchdown within two minutes of the gun.  Even if I had won "the bet", we would have followed the same agenda for the rest of the day.  Nice thing about driving one's own car is the option to arrive early and leave most of the baggage in the parking lot.  However, getting there so early also had the reward of providing us a prime shaded parking spot under a tree as well.

UPDATE!

I need to amend the advice I've given in the past as well as what I've read elsewhere.

I just got off the phone with this morning's Polynesian Resort's front desk manager, John (Jon?), who told me that they try to fulfill Guests' requests for rooms on the day before they arrive.

He said that as long as you have your room or building requests on your reservation, they will do their best to put you in that room or a room like that the day before you arrive.

Which Guest do they start with first? He said it is based on how far in advance you made your room request. The earliest reservation is the first presented to them on screen when they are assigning rooms. The screen shows if there is any particular room request and they see if they can honor that request the day before the Guest arrives. When that Guest is assigned a room, they move on to the next earliest Guest to have made a reservation and the process is repeated, and continues for each reservation.

He also said he couldn't assign me to any particular room today, because tomorrow is the day before I arrive. John also told me that it doesn't really matter if I call back tomorrow or not, because they use the computer's ordering of which Guest gets their requests fulfilled rather than by Guests calling about it.

So, make sure your room or building request is on your reservation, then just relax and take it easy. It apparently no longer makes a difference if in addition you phone or FAX a few days before your arrival.

The following part is from me, not John:
It probably wouldn't hurt to ask at the front desk during check-in if there is another room you could have if you're told that you'll be at a different room, and I would also think it is within your rights once you are first shown your room to request a different one if there is a problem with that room.

Well I can tell you from experience that I have requested a specific room and gotten it and also I have checked in to a room and did not like the view because there were bushes and trees growing right next to the lagoon view so I went back to the desk and asked to see what other lagoon view rooms were available and got into another room. I have also just asked at the desk when I check in what rooms are open and basically picked my room. Now I am sure this works different depending on the CM you get and they are in no way required to give you a choice of room at check in but in most cases if you approach them with a good attitude (not demanding) they will do their best. As far as requests for a building ahead of time I have no experience with that because I have never done that but when I have paid for a lagoon view or even better, a lagoon view concierge there are little or no options of building.

Thank you for the info!  I just called my AAA travel agent and put my request in. Three weeks from Friday we leave. Whoo Hoo!  But, Thursday I have to go for sinus surgery.  Boo Hoo!
So, since I won't have access to a computer  before I go to Disney (unless I go over to my friends house and use her computer for awhile, which I probably will have to do) I would like to thank Rich & TikiMan for all there help. Thank you guys, you two are the greatest! :wink2:
