Posting to this site on 11/16/03 was excrutiatingly slow.  Accessing message areas, waiting for messages to load and post, it was all so slow it was painful.  I went to other Internet sites, Disney and non-Disney, and they loaded up and functioned efficiently.  I come back to Disney Echo and it was slower than molasses in the wintertime.  Just a heads up to the powers that be, simply passing along what happened in the hopes of making things all the better.

lar3ry, the computer guru of EMuck.com told me when I asked him about this a couple of days ago (and it cleared up thereafter, so the slowdowns come and go) that he checked everything out on EMuck.com's system and everything is fine. He attributes it to parts of the internet slowing down, probably from all the downloads of the Paris Hilton video. If you don't know what that's all about, I suggest you search Google News about it, as that kind of thing is not appropriate for this forum.

If the Disney Echo was purely text-based as it was way back in the days of FidoNet (and as many other website message forums still are to this day) then there might be faster refreshes in heavy internet traffic times. But most of the Disney EchoEars (if not all) like the MickEmoticons, graphics and animations here on the Disney Echo the way it is now -- so during times when the internet gets slower you'll notice it more here than on sites that are more text-based.

You will also see a difference if you try accessing here in different parts of a 24-hour period due to more people using the internet at some times than others, even though it goes world-wide. And even though we think of the internet as one big network, it is really composed of a lot of "neighborhoods" connected together -- and if one of those areas experiences a large amount of activity then websites in that area will experience slowdowns. The Disney Echo's host system on EMuck.com is in the northeast U.S., whereas a lot of other Disney-based sites are in western U.S., so that might make a difference when comparing one website to another at the same time of day.

But even with all that being said, we are also in the process of upgrading the Disney Echo's database which might help move things along faster, too, once that is completed.

Good news! lar3ry at EMuck.com is installing a new version of the Disney Echo's forum software for us and with that installation we'll be switching to MySQL for the database, which is said to be much faster and less prone to errors like the current DBM database.

After he completes the installation I'll be making the modifications to it so that it looks like the Disney Echo we've all grown to know and love -- except it will be much faster!
:happydance:

Oh good! Thanks Rich ;) Yes, I've been experiencing massive slowdowns too - not to complain mind you, I love the Echo  , and I was sure it's not the Echo's fault and that it had to be massive net traffic or something.

I still believe lar3ry when he says it is mainly internet traffic -- because right now at 5:45 PM Eastern time as I write this my messages on the Disney Echo have been very speedily accepted and my browsing of other messages is fast here right now, too.

But we do need to upgrade the software and switch to the better way of handling the database, because we've been getting multiple posts sometimes as well as errors when new people have tried to register.

Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Good news! lar3ry deserves a big round of applause and a lot of appreciation from us for finding a way to prevent the reoccurrence of the recent slowdowns we've had on the Disney Echo!
:clapping: :thewave:

He found a setting he could change on the EMuck.com system that changed the priority for the CPU usage that the Disney Echo uses. That's why things have gotten faster again today, thanks to lar3ry!

I have noticed, though, that the speed of the internet does change at different times, which also affects the speed of the Disney Echo.

And in addition, work will continue on upgrading the Disney Echo including switching to the different database system that should eliminate the registration errors some new members to the Disney Echo have been experiencing lately as well as speeding things up even more.

It's running great now! I'm so happy! Thank you Lar3ry!

Now I can start checking up here daily again! I was really struggling to keep up a while, now I gotta go check and see what new EchoEARs I wasn't able to greet.  :mickey:

Thanks again!

Back to being s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-l-o-w afternoon and evening of Saturday, November 22, 2003 Central time zone.
'Nuff said.  Can't blame it on "busy Internet", I'm cruisin' other sites no problemo.

Things seem to be going faster now on my end, much better than ever, so maybe it just takes time. I don't know what that Paris thing was about (don't want to if you can't post it here), but for a while I think I could have gone on vacation there and made it back before I could have made a new post!
Thanks for your hard work Rich, and kudos to lar3ry for his too. :clapping:

The slowdown you experienced earlier today, Carol, was probably while lar3ry was installing newer software for the Disney Echo which we're in the process of changing over to. The same hard drive is used for installing the new software as well as for this existing version of the Disney Echo, hence the latest temporary slowdown. utilidor27, thanks for the update that things speeded up later in the day. The Paris thing is the latest Hollywood-star-has-naughty-bits-distributed-on-the-internet-in-a-video smut, so when a lot of folks download its large file it will eventually slow down parts of the internet for everyone using that area of the net.

Carol, other Disney sites probably also have much more expensive servers, too, than EMuck.com uses. But I expect there to be another big improvement to speed and reliability of the database once our forum's new system is up and running.

The latest on the upgrade is that lar3ry today completed basic installation of the new software for the Disney Echo on EMuck.com but before I switch this forum over to using it I need to change it from the standard plain-vanilla look it has to the look we've become accustomed to for the Disney Echo. In addition, I need to save the latest version of the files here on the older version and then import them into the newer version, changing the type of database system used at the same time.

Things are progressing along on the project, though!
