IMHO I think that they need to reopen the upstairs part where we actually got to use our imaginations...from what i have heard most of the "toys" are still up there and that the space itself is used for meetings every once and while :)

I think that it would fit nicely into the "Imagination Institute" theme :D

Kelly, I agree with you 100%! We finally saw the revamped attraction this year and besides the ride part of it still being having a need to be better, we sure missed the upstairs imaginative play area. We did enjoy seeing those 3D see-through cubes with 3D images of Disney Characters and Guests, though.

Looks like not all of Epcot Discoveryland, aka Project Gemini, will take place. Screamscape has heard a rumor that the idea to rehab Spaceship Earth into Time Racer cannot take place without damaging the structural integrity of the geosphere itself:

Quick quote:
The SSE: Time Racer project may have hit a critical snag. According to this latest rumor, they may not be able to just “gut” the insides of Spaceship Earth as they had previously thought, due to the fact that the many floors and structures that hold the current ride system may be critical to the geosphere’s structural integrety.

The rumor has been confirmed that the Spaceship Earth geosphere structure just simply can not be gutted and replaced with another ride due to the fact that that the current ride system is critical to the geosphere’s structural integrity. While, from a technical standpoint, it is still possible to go on with the project, the costs involved have likely risen to the point where it is no longer worth the effort and building the same ride in a new building from scratch would likely be a cheaper answer.

I haven't heard official confirmation yet, but it could be true: For years now Disney has only opened that attraction when there crowds are so thick that they need another place for people to go.

I'm very happy they are not re-doing Spaceship Earth. I like it the way it is. Well, they could jazz up the ending a bit better, but I love the rest of the ride.
If they feel Epcot needs a thrill ride let them put it in one of the country pavillions. There's room there.

Good news about the Carousel of Progress: between now an the holiday season, it's getting a rehab, including new faces for all the performers. This isn't a trivial thing, and suggests plans are to keep it open for some years to come.

At present, CoP (and The Timekeeper) are in "ride bank" status. They open seasonally, and when attendance is high enough to need more attraction capacity. As such, they are of significant benefit to the current operating plan, so I expect them to stick around.
