UPDATE: This rumor has been proven TRUE! Click here to go to the new discussion about it.

Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Rumors continue to circulate that a makeover will be happening at WDW's Alien Encounter in the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland.

www.wdwmagic.com reports Alien Encounter will close February 2004, and will reopen in October 2004 with the new Stitch storyline.  They've heard a budget of around บ million is being used to rework the attraction, including the creation of Stitch Audio Animatronics beginning this summer at WDI.

I think this would be a great idea! It would add another family attraction to WDW, since the current Alien Encounter is too intense for (at least some) young children.

Plus, I really want Stitch to get his own attraction of some kind!

I don't have any pictures of the rumored makeover of Alien Encounter, but I do have these to share with you:

This is when Stitch was temporarily atop WDW's Alien Encounter during promotion of the "Lilo & Stitch" animated feature.

This is from a Disneyland Main Street USA window display portraying Stitch in a scene from the movie, looking very similar to what might go into the rethemed Alien Encounter at WDW.

Yoo Hoo, Aliens!

I *like* this!

Alien Encounter has always struck me as an odd attraction, ill suited to the Magic Kingdom. Re-theming it to Stitch would be a great way to bring it back to the spirt of the MK.

I'll have to see if I can find any facts to support this rumor.

According to Screamscape, they've found from sources that the Stitch Overlay of Alien Encounter was given the final green light. It is not known when this retheming will begin, but they were told that the project will take 10 weeks to complete once it is begun.

Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

Changes to MK's Alien Encounter to make it an encounter with Stitch have been given the final green light from the bean counters, reports [url=http://www.screamscape.com/html/walt_disney_world.html]screamscape.com.

The changes will take 10 weeks to complete and work could start by the end of the year. That would mean the new Alien Encounter could reopen in time for Spring Break -- if Disney is willing to close down the attraction before the busy holiday season.

Planning is also reportedly going on to redo Mickey’s Star Traders to allow for the second Alien Encounter theater to have Guests into that gift shop the same way the other theater exits into the Merchant of Venus shop next door.

Now if they could just work in a way for the Tommorwland Transit Authority peoplemover to have some sort of a lookover into part of the attraction it would be perfect. Sort of a sneak preview like they do for all the other attractions.
George Lucas helped design Alien Encounter if I remember correctly, do they have some sort of collaberation with him on this project at all?

According to screamscape.com: "it sounds as if the Stitch makeover of Alien Encounter is closer than ever, and there is a good chance it could be announced at the October press blitz. Our latest batch of rumored info on the project claims that the transformation may take 10 months (previously we had heard 10 weeks, but perhaps one of these is a typo). The rumored story is that the current Convention Center will now be themed as an Alien Detainment Facility, with SIR taking on the roll of a Robot Policeman who has Stitch currently under lock and key inside the transportation tube where Skippy currently resides. The main show will still offer the same basic experience of an Alien escaping from the glass tube and havoc throughout the entire theater. However, we are not sure if it will be Stitch in the tube or another one of his fellow Experiments gone wild. Disney will also retheme this to be more appropriate to kids and will lower the scare factor as well as the height limit."

I think it's a great idea. I didn't care for Alien Encounter much and a Stitch attraction would really be a lot of fun. I never did understand why Alien Encounter was there in the first place. Stitch replacing it would be cool in my book. ;)
