Big Thunder is now officially listed on the Disney site as undergoing refurbishment August 25th-November 21st. UPDATE: August 24, 2003 - November 25, 2003. We are disappointed that it will be closed during our visit...but there are plenty of other rides to go on!

Like you andymattmom, I will be disappointed but not dis-stressed over Big Thunder Mountain rehab when I am there in Sept.  It was the first ride my son and I went on in 1985 for our first trip to The World.  He is now as hooked as I  and is staying at The Hard Rock Hotel this week.  At least this year he will not miss it.  Thanks for the update.  Disneyn   :minnie:

So it will still be closed when we're there on our October trip (unless somehow the rehab goes much quicker than planned, which I doubt). Must be a very big refurbishment for it to be down for so long.

My wife and I enjoyed it a lot, with very short lines, when we were there in June. My son didn't want to ride it, no way, too scary.
:stare:

When I told Carol the bad news about BTM being closed for our next trip she was sad (but we'll all get over it, knowing it will be back for the trip we take after this one). When I told Michael the "bad news" and reminded him how Carol and I had tried to convince him to give BTM a try because he likes Goofy's Barnstormer and even went on Splash Mountain twice with no problems. Michael's response to BTM's rehab during our next trip was "Wa-hooo!" with a big smile.
:wwww:

Seems he sees BTM's rehab as a relief, knowing there's no way he'll have to ride it in October.
:shifty:

BooHoo from my daughter. Two years ago she missed the height requirement. Now she was soooo looking forward to all the "BIG" rides during our November vacation ( 2-8 ); just missing the re-opening.

Space and Splash Mountains will now be on the top of the list.

Maybe next year!

I'm sorry for all of you who have upcoming trips to WDW while big thunder is undergoing refurbishment.  Luckily it looks like we will arive for our next trip not long after it reopens (Nov. 26 - Dec. 5)  :tounge:   Big Thunder is one of my families favorite rides.

Now, don't be so smug...

Wasnt trying to be smug...just very excited that it is scheduled to be open during our trip.   ;)

In the event it is not open during our next stay, I will be disappointed  :(  but with so much to do I know we will be able to replace it with another ride, maybe extra rides on space mountain to get our thrill ride fix.

I feel terrible about BTM, I was looking forward to riding it in Sept., and now that I found out about the Swiss Family Treehouse, I have one less attraction for my two  year old. But there is still lots to see and do, and I am REALLY looking forward to seeing his face when they do spectro. and the fireworks. I am planning on watching those eyes of his just bug out at all the neat stuff! :o

Work that will be done on the attraction included general maintenance of the ride system and repainting of the mountain itself.

Disney now shows the rehab date as having changed slightly: August 24, 2003 - November 22, 2003 for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at WDW's Magic Kingdom.

UPDATE: Because of the fatal accident at Disneyland's version, WDW's BTMRR might need more renovation than planned, which could make the reopening date later.
